Perplexity is hiring a full-time Member of Technical Staff focused on Machine Learning Engineering for Search and Agents in Belgrade.

Role Overview

Perplexity operates across the complete artificial intelligence stack, managing underlying models, agent harnesses, and search infrastructure. The organization builds novel approaches that leverage search effectively, create specialized execution environments, and optimize retrieval systems to support autonomous agent behavior.

Key Responsibilities

Enhance search and agent performance by refining models, training datasets, system design, and specialized tools.
Implement large language model post-training techniques, such as reinforcement learning, to boost reasoning, tool utilization, and task execution.
Train and assess multi-agent architectures to understand collaborative task splitting, data sharing, and coordination.
Construct agent harnesses incorporating orchestration, context management, and execution environments for multi-step reliability.
Optimize ranking, retrieval, and search interfaces utilized by agents for information assessment.
Construct evaluations, reward signals, and datasets to identify failure modes and direct enhancements.
Manage experiments completely from initial hypothesis formulation to scalable training, deployment, and optimization of quality, cost, and latency.
Partner alongside product, infrastructure, data, search, and artificial intelligence teams to deploy novel features into production environments.

Requirements

Demonstrated history of developing and launching machine learning solutions, featuring extensive background in reinforcement learning, large language model post-training, retrieval, or agent frameworks.
Proficient software engineering capabilities spanning production systems, experimentation frameworks, and model training.
Background in formulating strict evaluations, troubleshooting failures, and converting tests into tangible optimizations.
Ability to navigate ambiguous challenges combining research intuition with practical software development.
High degree of accountability, inquisitiveness, and motivation to drive concepts through to functional architectures.

Nice to Have

Background in training models for multi-step task execution or tool integration.
Familiarity with multi-agent evaluation, coordination, or training.
History of constructing scalable inference infrastructure, distributed training setups, or agent frameworks.
Experience with large-scale recommendation, ranking, or retrieval mechanisms.
