About this role

The Machine Learning Infrastructure Engineer role at Anthropic involves building and scaling the systems that detect and mitigate AI model misuse in San Francisco, CA or New York City, NY. This position suits an experienced software professional eager to develop deep machine learning expertise while owning vital research and production tooling.

Role Overview

Anthropic is hiring a Machine Learning Infrastructure Engineer to support the Safeguards team. This position bridges research and production by creating the internal tooling, pipelines, and abstractions that researchers use to train, evaluate, and scale lightweight detection methods. The work directly contributes to the company's Responsible Scaling Policy commitments by identifying harmful behavior efficiently across evolving models.

Key Responsibilities

Build and scale the data pipelines and infrastructure dedicated to Safeguards machine learning research.
Manage workflows for training, scoring, and evaluation to accelerate the journey from an initial concept to a finished result.
Design command-line tools, libraries, and user interfaces that allow researchers to operate independently of underlying systems.
Implement sanity checking and correctness measures to ensure data integrity as workloads and models shift.
Transition high-value exploratory experiments into dependable, production-ready jobs.
Enhance the reliability, cost-efficiency, and throughput of large-scale scoring and inference workloads.
Collaborate closely with Safeguards engineers and researchers to anticipate future infrastructure needs and design solutions proactively.

Requirements

Strong software engineering foundation with hands-on coding proficiency in Python.
Experience in building and running distributed or data-intensive systems within a production environment.
Background in developing infrastructure or tooling consumed by other engineers or researchers as a dependency.
Ability to manage work across the complete pipeline, transitioning smoothly from exploratory setups to production.
Skill in debugging performance and correctness issues across unfamiliar technical stacks.
Excellent written and verbal communication abilities paired with a collaborative mindset.
Minimum education of a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field or an equivalent combination of training, education, and professional experience.
Alignment with the location-based hybrid policy requiring presence in an office at least 25% of the time.

Nice to Have

Practical experience with large-scale, high-performance machine learning systems.
Familiarity with transformers, language modeling, and interacting with model internals.
Exposure to accelerator or GPU programming, machine learning framework internals, or inference optimization.
Background in building evaluation harnesses, caching layers, or experiment tracking tools for research groups.
Experience working with classifier development, interpretability, or probes.
Demonstrated interest in mitigating the misuse risks associated with artificial intelligence.

Skills and Tools

Python
Distributed and data-intensive systems
Machine learning infrastructure and experiment tracking tooling
Inference optimization and large-scale scoring pipelines
