About this role
To support the physical buildout and infrastructure expansion of high-performance data centers, xAI requires an Industrial Pipefitter to handle large-scale mechanical installations. The incoming professional will directly contribute to the creation of next-generation AI supercomputing infrastructure by installing, fitting, and testing heavy piping systems across active construction sites. Daily duties involve working closely with mechanical, welding, structural, electrical, and operations teams to translate complex engineering drawings into functional utility and process lines. Successful candidates thrive in a flat organizational structure, possess a strong work ethic, and demonstrate the hands-on commitment necessary to keep construction schedules moving forward.
What you will do
- Install large-bore industrial piping systems including process, mechanical, and utility lines by measuring, cutting, beveling, fitting, hanging, and making up joints according to technical drawings and specifications.
- Perform flange, groove, thread, and welded-joint fit-up while aligning pipe, setting gaps, and preparing joints for the welding crew.
- Install valves, fittings, hangers, supports, struts, and anchors while ensuring pipe racks and supports remain plumb and on grade.
- Read isometric, spool, and arrangement drawings to field-route materials correctly and flag any drawing conflicts prior to installation.
- Support hydro, pneumatic, and service tests by installing blinds and test packs, walking lines, and repairing any identified leaks.
- Assist with equipment set for pumps, cooling towers, air handlers, and related mechanical gear, which includes the bolt-up of suction and discharge piping.
- Follow established LOTO, PPE, and permit rules to maintain strict safety standards and never work on live systems without proper authorization.
- Support punch-list work, material staging, and daily area cleanups through final system turnover.
What you need
- Minimum of three years of experience installing large industrial or commercial piping, completion of a recognized pipefitter apprenticeship, or equivalent military experience.
- Ability to travel extensively to data center construction sites and remain onsite during peak construction phases.
- Capability to work in industrial environments, climb ladders, lift and position moderate loads, stand and walk for a full shift, and wear personal protective equipment for extended periods.
- Willingness to work extended hours, nights, and weekends during critical construction windows.
- Strong safety mindset with the willingness to follow site procedures, including lockout-tagout protocols and safety permits.
Nice to have
- Experience fitting and installing welded, flanged, grooved, or threaded pipe including hangers and supports
- Prior experience on data center, industrial, or heavy-civil construction sites
- Experience working with large-bore welded industrial piping such as carbon or stainless steel and equipment connections
- UA, NCCER, or equivalent pipefitter credential alongside OSHA 10 or equivalent training
- Familiarity with hot-work, hydrotest, and flange-management practices
