About this role

Role Overview

The Engineering Manager, Scheduler and Fleet Efficiency role at Anthropic involves leading a specialized team that builds and optimizes the scheduling layer for a massive compute fleet. Based in San Francisco, CA or New York City, NY, this position suits an experienced engineering leader with a background in distributed systems who wants to support critical infrastructure for artificial intelligence research.

Key Responsibilities

Lead, mentor, and grow a team of software engineers responsible for the scheduling platform, job-launch tooling, and fleet-efficiency systems.
Establish technical direction covering workload placement, queueing, quota management, and scheduling logic across a heterogeneous compute fleet.
Collaborate closely with capacity planning, research, inference, and product teams to integrate workloads onto established infrastructure pathways.
Drive product and engineering roadmaps focused on expanding scheduler capabilities, boosting fleet utilization, and improving developer experience.
Define, track, and hold the team accountable for key metrics related to scheduling quality, such as utilization rates, queue wait times, and job-start latency.
Navigate an ambiguous, fast-paced environment where demand for compute frequently outstrips available supply.
Cultivate an inclusive, equitable culture centered on hiring, coaching, and long-term career development.
Represent the engineering team across the broader organization and contribute to company-wide engineering initiatives.

Requirements

Professional experience managing and growing software engineering teams.
A hands-on background as an individual contributor in software engineering prior to moving into management.
Proven experience building or operating large-scale distributed systems or infrastructure systems within production environments.
Working knowledge of Kubernetes and cluster scheduling concepts, including resource requests and limits, affinity rules, priority, preemption, and custom controllers.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to build clarity across diverse cross-functional teams.
Minimum education of a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field of study, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Alignment with the location-based hybrid policy requiring regular time in one of the company offices.

Nice to Have

Five or more years of engineering management experience, specifically leading infrastructure, platform, or compute teams.
Practical experience owning a cluster scheduler, job orchestration system, or resource manager operating at scale.
Familiarity with scheduling machine learning workloads on specialized hardware accelerators and balancing tradeoffs between utilization, fairness, and latency.
Experience designing and building developer tooling relied upon by engineers on a daily basis.
Background in observability or incident response for control-plane systems, along with a track record of enhancing production reliability.
Demonstrated commitment to building a culture of belonging and engineering excellence.
