About this role

Keeping field-deployed autonomous robotic systems operational requires solving complex integration challenges where custom hardware meets low-level operating system code. The DeviceOS team builds and maintains the unified platform powering autonomous aerial systems and Sentry Towers across land, sea, and air.

In this role, the engineer owns the boundary between silicon vendor packages and mission software, managing boot chains, device trees, kernel drivers, and encrypted filesystems. Daily responsibilities include customizing vendor BSPs, debugging hardware boot sequences, ensuring deterministic peripheral enumeration, and remediating security vulnerabilities on active fleets. A successful candidate possesses deep embedded Linux expertise, strong systems programming skills, and practical experience maintaining software on physical hardware where regressions have immediate operational impacts.

What you will do

  • Manage the complete boot sequence on deployed compute hardware, covering low-level firmware, U-Boot or UEFI, unified kernel images, and encrypted storage unlocking.
  • Reconcile vendor Board Support Packages with modern package sets while producing necessary kernel and device tree patches for custom hardware behavior.
  • Guarantee that all peripherals, such as cameras, radars, motor controllers, and radios, enumerate reliably and operate correctly across platform boots.
  • Triage and remediate Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures in vendor kernels and low-level system components already deployed in the field.
  • Build and maintain automated Hardware-in-the-Loop test suites to detect regressions in power states and platform stability before code reaches physical hardware.
  • Perform deep root-cause analysis on intermittent bus errors, thermal throttling, and kernel panics using serial consoles, logic analyzers, and schematics.
  • Triage upstream kernel issues and maintain custom patch sets forward as the underlying platform evolves.

What you need

  • Four or more years of professional experience in embedded Linux platform development, sustainment of deployed embedded Linux platforms, or kernel-adjacent integration.
  • Deep understanding of embedded Linux boot chains, including bootloaders, device trees, kernel command lines, initrd, and root filesystem assembly.
  • Strong programming skills in C for kernel and driver development, alongside proficiency in Rust or C++ for userspace platform integration.
  • Hands-on experience debugging hardware at the bench using serial consoles, schematics, component datasheets, and board-level tracing.
  • Experience maintaining software deployed on real-world hardware with strict requirements for safe, resilient, and non-bricking updates.
  • U.S. Person status under export control regulations, with eligibility to obtain and maintain a U.S. security clearance.

Nice to have

  • Direct experience with Nix or NixOS for embedded builds, or deep expertise in Yocto or Buildroot.
  • Hands-on experience with NVIDIA Jetson or Tegra Linux BSPs and boot architectures.
  • Practical implementation of hardware root-of-trust, secure boot, or measured boot.
  • Experience architecting automated test benches using Python or Bash.
  • Upstream open-source contributions to the Linux kernel or U-Boot.

Benefits

  • Competitive equity grants included in the majority of full-time offers
  • Comprehensive health and recovery benefits package provided at little to no cost

Questions candidates ask

What is the salary range for this position?

The salary range for this role is estimated between $166,000 and $220,000 USD based on base salary only. Actual offers may vary depending on work experience, education, critical skills, and business considerations.

What are the citizenship or security requirements?

U.S. Person status is required due to export control regulations under ITAR and EAR. Candidates must also be eligible to obtain and maintain a U.S. security clearance.

What kind of hardware and systems will I be working with?

The team develops advanced robotic systems operating at the edge across land, sea, and air, including Group 1 through 3 autonomous aerial systems and Sentry Towers. The underlying architecture uses custom carrier boards, embedded ARM architectures, and NVIDIA Jetson modules integrated with electro-optical cameras, radars, CAN-connected sensor nodes, GPS, and motor drivers.

What additional compensation is provided beyond base salary?

Highly competitive equity grants are included in the majority of full-time offers as part of the total compensation package. Additionally, the company offers top-tier benefits supporting health and recovery at little to no cost.
