About this role
The Ecosystem Security team at Epic Games builds technology and transparent policies to create safer, more positive experiences across multiple products and services. Working within this group, the Data Science Intern takes ownership of a specific fraud and abuse detection problem throughout the development cycle. Collaboration with a data science mentor and operations analysts involves exploring data, building models, and measuring protective impact on players.
Daily responsibilities include investigating large datasets, constructing statistical or machine learning models, and translating operational heuristics into model features. Ideal candidates bring a strong foundation in statistics, data analysis skills in Python, and genuine curiosity about adversarial problems and online trust and safety.
What you will do
- Explore large transaction, account, gameplay, and behavioral datasets to characterize how specific forms of abuse operate.
- Build and evaluate statistical or machine learning models to detect abusive activity at scale.
- Partner with operations analysts to translate investigation heuristics into model features and measure results against real outcomes.
- Build dashboards and monitoring tools so the team can track signals independently.
- Document data sources, methodologies, and findings to ensure the work can be extended after the internship.
- Present analytical results and technical findings clearly to the team.
What you need
- Demonstrated experience using Python for data analysis, with a preference for pandas and scikit-learn.
- Ability to write SQL against large datasets in order to independently pull and shape data.
- A solid grounding in statistics and machine learning fundamentals, including classification and evaluation metrics beyond simple accuracy.
- Genuine curiosity about adversarial problems and how individuals attempt to game systems.
- Good interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to share technical findings within a team.
- A flexible approach to rapidly evolving problems and comfort working with messy or sparsely labeled data.
Nice to have
- Exposure to anomaly detection, graph or network analysis, text classification and NLP, or sequence and time-series modeling.
- Interest in games, live services, or online trust and safety.
