About this role

Anthropic is building reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems with a quickly growing group of researchers, engineers, policy experts, and business leaders. Hardware is becoming critical to how AI gets developed, creating new and complex legal questions that require dedicated counsel to navigate safely. The commercial counsel for hardware negotiates high-volume procurement agreements, manages multifaceted technology and data partnerships, and partners directly with technical leaders on risk assessments. Candidates who thrive in this position possess a low-ego approach, clear communication skills, and hands-on experience handling hardware and firmware transactions in fast-paced environments.

What you will do

  • Negotiate and close a high volume of agreements for hardware and components, including the review of embedded firmware and companion software licenses.
  • Structure and negotiate complex technology, data, and partnership agreements.
  • Track legal and regulatory changes affecting hardware products and components, such as product safety rules and foreign component restrictions.
  • Identify trade, export control, sanctions, and supply chain concerns in cross-border sourcing alongside national security and compliance teams.
  • Build and maintain self-serve guidance, templates, and AI-assisted review tools for routine purchases.
  • Manage outside counsel for specialist questions and overflow volume while supporting other technology or hardware transactions.

What you need

  • Hold a JD with active membership in at least one U.S. state bar, with California preferred.
  • Bring hands-on experience buying hardware, firmware, components, and software in high-volume, fast-paced environments.
  • Demonstrate deep experience leading complex deals such as technology or data licensing, joint development, or supply partnerships.
  • Possess a working knowledge of international supply chains, contract risks, and trade compliance including export controls and tariffs.
  • Communicate clearly and plainly with scientists, engineers, and operators to turn legal risk into actionable decisions.

Nice to have

  • At least 8 years of legal experience in hardware or a closely related technical space
  • In-house time at a hardware-intensive technology company while scaling quickly
  • Experience supporting product or engineering teams as a dedicated counsel
  • Experience with facilities or on-site vendor services including insurance and safety questions
