About this role

Anthropic needs to bridge the gap between internal AI capabilities and real-world customer adoption, ensuring that new models translate into practical, scalable solutions. The Applied AI Research Team solves this by embedding engineers directly with product groups and strategic clients to test limits, build evaluations, and guide go-to-market strategies.

As an Applied AI Research Engineer, you will discover what the models can do, prove capabilities with real users, and feed field realities back to product and research groups. You will manage the technical and go-to-market handshake for launches, build prototypes, and solve novel customer challenges directly.

Success in this function requires deep technical curiosity, strong interpersonal skills to communicate complex concepts, and the ability to operate effectively amidst ambiguity. Ideal candidates possess a service-oriented mindset, extensive software engineering or technical product background, and a drive to advance safe, reliable AI systems.

What you will do

  • Embed with product teams to build deep technical expertise on new products and capabilities as they develop.
  • Own the technical and go-to-market handshake for model and product launches through early testing and field readiness assessments.
  • Build demos, evaluations, and prototypes that showcase customer-relevant model capabilities and define good performance standards.
  • Develop enablement materials like playbooks and training sessions in partnership with Technical Enablement teams.
  • Engage hands-on with strategic customers facing novel technical challenges to discover scalable solutions for the broader field.
  • Synthesize insights from customer engagements to identify adoption patterns and inform product roadmaps.
  • Partner with Sales to support high-value accounts requiring specialized domain knowledge and travel occasionally to customer sites.

What you need

  • Six plus years of experience as a software engineer, technical product manager, forward deployed engineer, or similar technical role.
  • A track record of going deep on technical problems and translating learnings into tools or materials that help others succeed.
  • Strong technical aptitude with proficiency in at least one programming language.
  • Meaningful experience building with large language models, including shipping products or integrating models into production systems.
  • Experience designing evaluations, building prototypes, or developing technical enablement for complex products.
  • Excellent communication skills to convey complicated topics clearly to diverse internal and external stakeholders.
  • The ability to navigate ambiguity, flex into different domains, and collaborate effectively with a service-oriented mindset.
