About this role
Scholars and researchers who enjoy applying rigorous academic judgment to complex humanistic questions will find a strong fit in this AI Tutor position. The team at xAI works on training the Grok model to reason accurately, weigh evidence carefully, and communicate uncertainty honestly across disciplines like history, philosophy, and literature. Team members operate in a flat organizational structure and take a hands-on approach to building advanced AI systems.
Working directly on model enhancement, you will evaluate outputs for factual accuracy, logical coherence, and hidden assumptions while creating high-quality datasets grounded in primary sources. This role exists to ensure that machine learning models handle contested humanistic inquiries with scholarly precision rather than creative writing or ungrounded speculation. Success requires exceptional analytical writing in English and a habitual reliance on primary sources to guide model behavior.
What you will do
- Evaluate model outputs in your specific field for factual accuracy, logical coherence, fallacious reasoning, and hidden assumptions.
- Flag confident-sounding errors, anachronisms, misused sources, ideological bias, and claims that outrun the available evidence.
- Create exemplary responses and datasets that demonstrate intellectual honesty, careful source evaluation, and proper distinction between evidence and speculation.
- Steel-man opposing views before criticizing them while clearly marking what is settled, contested, or unknown.
- Ground annotations and reference answers in primary sources and weigh secondary scholarship against that record.
- Collaborate with engineering teams to design evaluation tasks, rubrics, and examples that strengthen Grok's behavior in the humanities.
What you need
- Deep knowledge in at least one field such as linguistics, history, classical studies, literature, poetry, philosophy, ethics, visual arts, or performing arts.
- Ability to assess arguments for validity, soundness, hidden premises, and category errors beyond mere surface correctness.
- Habitual reliance on primary sources alongside skill at weighing them against secondary literature.
- Demonstrated ability to steel-man opposing views and separate settled knowledge from interpretation.
- Excellent analytical writing skills in English that remain clear, precise, and calibrated to the strength of evidence.
- Comfort working from evolving instructions to produce annotations, critiques, and reference answers at a consistent standard.
Nice to have
- PhD in a listed field or equivalent demonstrated scholarly depth
- Published analytical work such as peer-reviewed articles, monographs, or critical editions
- Experience in teaching, academic peer review, archival research, textual criticism, or historiography
- Range across more than one listed field or across historically and culturally distinct canons
- Familiarity with evaluating AI or LLM outputs, building benchmarks, or creating training data
Benefits
- Health insurance for eligible U.S. based positions
