About this role

Role Overview

Evvy is seeking a Translational ML Scientist to join its Science and R&D department in New York City. This full-time role suits an experienced machine learning professional with a background in biological data who wants to transform proprietary microbiome datasets into impactful clinical and consumer tools.

Key Responsibilities

Design and construct diagnostic and prognostic models, including classifiers, risk prediction systems, biomarker discovery mechanisms, and treatment personalization frameworks.
Analyze shotgun metagenomics information paired directly with patient-reported outcomes from the proprietary data repository.
Manage the complete lifecycle of models, spanning feature engineering, training, validation, performance tracking, and the documentation required for engineering handoffs.
Collaborate with leadership and research teams to define performance criteria, interpretability benchmarks, and real-world validation methods.
Coordinate with product and engineering teams to turn model outputs into functional diagnostic tools for patients and clinicians.
Establish organizational standards for evaluation, reproducibility, and the communication of uncertainty.
Contribute to the long-term modeling roadmap by identifying strategic opportunities within the dataset.

Requirements

Possess 5 to 8 years of post-graduate experience, ideally holding a PhD in machine learning, computational biology, bioinformatics, statistics, or a related discipline, though exceptional MS candidates are welcome.
Demonstrate strong expertise in both machine learning methodologies and computational biology.
Bring practical industry experience in deploying machine learning or computational biology models to production environments that serve real users.
Show hands-on fluency in Python alongside modern machine learning frameworks and specialized microbiome tools.
Understand the complexities of microbiome data, such as sparsity, compositional data, batch effects, and taxonomic versus functional profiling.
Possess strong product instincts, recognizing that the true deliverable is the enabled feature or diagnostic tool rather than the model alone.
Exhibit cross-functional collaboration capabilities to bridge gaps between clinical researchers, product managers, and software engineers.
