Role Overview

Qualified Health seeks a Technical Lead Applied AI Engineer for a hybrid position based in Palo Alto. This position involves defining multi-year infrastructure strategy, engaging in leadership-level discussions regarding AI direction, and maintaining hands-on coding involvement for complex technical hurdles.

Key Responsibilities

Formulate the multi-year technical strategy and architecture for agentic workflow infrastructure spanning over 100 workflows.
Represent applied AI engineering during cross-functional and leadership decisions concerning platform investment and product direction.
Establish organization-wide engineering benchmarks for LLM evaluation, safety, deployment, and monitoring to support AI governance.
Serve as the primary technical escalation resource for ambiguous and complex challenges across product lines.
Mentor Staff-level engineers and contribute to the definition of the technical career ladder for applied AI.
Assess emerging models, frameworks, and techniques from providers such as OpenAI, Anthropic, and Mistral for potential adoption.
Collaborate with founders and engineering leadership to align AI infrastructure investments with company strategy.

Requirements

Software engineering background utilizing Python with a history of architecting company-wide systems.
Minimum of 8 years creating production software, including 4 or more years building and scaling LLM-driven applications in production environments.
Demonstrated capability in setting technical standards and direction utilized across multiple teams.
Expertise in MLOps, model deployment, and organizational-level workflow automation.
Ability to function autonomously on ambiguous and strategic technical problems.
Experience influencing technical choices at the leadership level with non-technical stakeholders.

Nice to Have

Bachelor's degree with 10 years of experience, or Master's degree with 8 years of experience in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
Recognized expertise in applied AI or agentic systems via publications, talks, open source contributions, or prior platform roles.
Background developing AI infrastructure within regulated or high-stakes domains such as healthcare or finance.
Experience founding or scaling a technical function within a startup setting.
Background in mentoring Staff-level engineers and developing technical career ladders.
