Role Overview

Qualified-health-pbc is hiring a Principal Applied AI Engineer to establish the technical roadmap for agentic AI applications across the entire product suite. Located in Palo Alto with hybrid work options, this position demands a combination of hands-on coding and high-level strategy to shape real-time algorithm monitoring, AI governance, and safety guardrails within the healthcare sector.

Key Responsibilities

Design and architect the multi-year technical strategy for agentic workflow infrastructure across numerous product workflows.
Collaborate with leadership and cross-functional teams regarding platform investment, build-versus-buy choices, and product direction.
Establish engineering standards for safety, LLM deployment, evaluation, and monitoring to support governance frameworks.
Solve complex, high-ambiguity technical hurdles across various product lines as an escalation point.
Coach and guide Staff-level engineers while contributing to the design of the applied AI career framework.
Research and test emerging models, frameworks, and techniques from providers such as OpenAI, Anthropic, and Mistral.
Coordinate with engineering leadership and founders to align AI infrastructure investments with overarching business goals.

Requirements

Strong background in software engineering utilizing Python.
Minimum of 8 years of professional software development experience, including at least 4 years focused on scaling and building production-grade LLM or AI-driven systems.
Demonstrated history of establishing technical directions adopted across multiple teams.
Advanced knowledge of MLOps, workflow automation, and model deployment at a platform level.
Capacity to function independently when resolving ambiguous strategic and technical challenges.
Demonstrated ability to guide technical choices at the leadership level and communicate effectively with non-technical stakeholders.

Nice to Have

Bachelor's degree with 10 years of experience, Master's degree with 8 years of experience, or equivalent background in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
Demonstrated authority in applied AI or agentic systems through talks, open-source work, publications, or prior platform roles.
Background in developing AI infrastructure within regulated or high-stakes environments like healthcare or finance.
Experience scaling or founding technical operations in a startup setting.
Background in mentoring Staff engineers and defining professional ladders.
