Role Overview

The Ads Foundational Representations team creates signals and representations for core entities like ads, posts, and users to capture semantic and behavioral context. In this role, you will divide your time evenly between technical leadership and hands-on engineering execution. You will set technical direction across multiple pillars, lead cross-functional machine learning initiatives, and mentor engineering staff.

Key Responsibilities

Provide technical mentorship and guidance to machine learning engineers while driving design reviews and best practices.
Collaborate with organizational leadership to shape the technical strategy for content-based embeddings and ad relevance.
Build, iterate, and improve embedding models for advertising use cases, including two-tower architectures and sequence models.
Work with local and third-party large language models and vision-language models to extract representations and fine-tune state-of-the-art embeddings.
Construct data processing and inference pipelines to support developed models.
Perform qualitative and quantitative evaluations, running end-to-end experiments from internal benchmarks to downstream recommender system metrics.
Ensure high reliability, scalability, and performance of machine learning systems by implementing automated tests and robust monitoring.
Partner with cross-functional groups to translate business requirements into technical deliverables.

Requirements

Seven or more years of hands-on professional experience managing the full lifecycle of designing, training, evaluating, testing, and deploying industry-grade models.
Demonstrated technical leadership at a staff level, including mentoring peers, establishing technical standards, and leading complex cross-functional projects without direct authority.
Exceptional verbal and written communication skills capable of explaining intricate technical topics to varied audiences.
Proven track record addressing content-heavy natural language processing and computer vision challenges at scale using embeddings.
Demonstrated data-driven mindset for machine learning system development and performance analysis.
Familiarity with the digital ads domain, search systems, or recommender systems.
Proficiency in mainstream deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch or TensorFlow.

Nice to Have

Practical experience with the existing technology stack including Python, PyTorch, Airflow, BigQuery, Ray, Kubernetes, Kafka, and GCP.
Prior technical leadership experience mentoring junior team members.
Hands-on background utilizing, fine-tuning, or constructing large language models.
