Role Overview

The Staff Frontend Engineer for the Grafana DataViz squad leads the creation and evolution of core data visualization features within the observability platform. The group handles end-to-end user experiences, including dashboards, navigation, sharing, and data manipulation. Responsibilities involve driving complex technical initiatives from problem framing to rollout, enhancing testing strategies for visual regressions, and modernizing visual components like tables and gauges using tools like React, TypeScript, uPlot, and eCharts.

Key Responsibilities

Lead multi-quarter technical initiatives from initial problem framing through to rollout, user feedback collection, and metric measurement.
Mentor and collaborate with engineers through code reviews, design feedback, and pairing on challenging tasks.
Participate in on-call rotations for built services, assist in incident response, and engage in post-incident learning.
Provide technical support during customer escalations to identify and resolve sources of high friction.
Collaborate across squads by writing design proposals, running demos, and advocating for the team roadmap.
Utilize company-funded AI coding assistants within security guidelines for faster prototyping, test generation, and documentation.

Requirements

Solid experience leading teams through engineering projects, mentoring others, and acting as a force multiplier.
Clear communication skills suited for a fully remote, asynchronous work environment.
Practical experience operating production software, participating in on-call rotations, ensuring reliability, and responding to incidents.
Ability to break down complex problems into short feedback loops involving analysis, design, MVP delivery, learning, and iteration.
Familiarity with AI technologies and frameworks focused on delivering real-world, practical solutions.
Self-starter mindset capable of managing complex engineering problems with minimal supervision.

Nice to Have

Open-source contribution or maintainership experience with comfort engaging communities in the open.
Active interest in observability metrics, logs, and traces alongside familiarity with platforms like Grafana, Prometheus, Loki, or Tempo.
Previous experience working in a fully remote and globally distributed team.
