About this role

Defense is seeking a Staff Engineer for Computer Vision (C++) in Melbourne to support the development of real-time perception capabilities for autonomous systems. This technical position suits an experienced software professional looking to design and integrate advanced computer vision algorithms into high-performance C++ software pipelines.

Role Overview

In this position, the professional focuses on building custom perception capabilities from the ground up for Shield AI's intelligent systems. The work centers on real-time performance, reliability, and deployment in edge compute environments. The team aims to increase its technical depth and capacity in applied machine learning, image processing, and real-time computer vision to support operations worldwide.

Key Responsibilities

Design, develop, and integrate advanced computer vision algorithms into high-performance C++ software pipelines.
Build custom perception capabilities from scratch with a strong focus on edge compute deployment, reliability, and real-time performance.
Translate complex research concepts into robust, deployable software systems rather than depending exclusively on standard pre-existing libraries.
Develop geometry-based computer vision pipelines, including camera modeling, intrinsic and extrinsic calibration, and image-to-world projection.
Work on geolocation from imagery, visual registration, and multi-sensor spatial alignment.

Requirements

Strong software engineering skills using the C++ programming language.
Demonstrated experience in developing high-performance or real-time software systems.
Deep and fundamental understanding of computer vision principles.
Ability to work effectively on bespoke algorithms for edge compute environments.

Nice to Have
