About this role

The Staff Data Engineer - AI Platform role at TRM Labs is a remote, full-time position based in the United States within the R&D department. This opportunity suits an independent distributed systems professional who thrives in a high-velocity, high-ownership environment supporting mission-critical government cloud operations.

Role Overview

TRM Labs provides AI-powered intelligence solutions that help public and private sector agencies investigate and disrupt crime, making the world safer and more secure. In this role, you will join the Data Platform Serving team to work on the StarRocks-backed serving layer that powers government cloud investigations. Operating alongside the engineer who currently owns this domain solo, you will help keep the regulated, high-availability government cloud deployment fast, reliable, and compliant as it scales.

Key Responsibilities

Own performance tuning on the StarRocks serving layer, utilizing AI-assisted query profiling like Claude and internal tooling to resolve slow query patterns.
Build and harden data pipelines feeding government cloud investigations by leveraging AI code review workflows to ship reliable changes quickly in high-compliance settings.
Mitigate single-point-of-failure risks on GovCloud data infrastructure by operating as the secondary independent owner and troubleshooter for the serving layer.
Triage production issues in a regulated environment using AI-assisted debugging and log analysis to quickly uncover root causes.

Requirements

U.S. citizenship is strictly required for this role due to government cloud data access regulations.
Hands-on experience operating distributed OLAP or serving-layer systems such as StarRocks, Trino, or ClickHouse, including query tuning and performance optimization at scale.
Demonstrated experience owning data pipeline reliability, incident response, and utilizing AI tools like Claude or Cursor to accelerate debugging, documentation, and code reviews.
Independent ownership mindset with the ability to ramp up quickly on unfamiliar production infrastructure using AI-assisted research and take on-call responsibilities with minimal oversight.
