About this role

Staff Computer Vision Engineer - Perception is a full-time role based in Munich at se3, focusing on building spatial intelligence and autonomy software for unmanned systems. This position suits an experienced technical leader who prefers hands-on coding and algorithmic design over people management in the defence and autonomy sector.

Role Overview

The Staff Computer Vision Engineer - Perception works at se3 in Munich to solve difficult perception challenges for autonomous platforms. Around 80% of the daily work involves hands-on coding, architecture design, and algorithm development without direct management duties. The engineer collaborates directly with founders, the perception lead, and autonomy engineers to transition research depth into functional field systems.

Key Responsibilities

Shape the architecture of the perception stack and guide core algorithmic decisions alongside the team lead.
Build robust object detection and multi-object tracking systems that function reliably on mission data.
Develop semantic segmentation and depth estimation features to provide downstream autonomy with accurate scene understanding.
Design evaluation loops, replay mechanisms, benchmark datasets, and regression tests using recorded data.
Optimize machine learning models for onboard compute and test them during field trials under realistic operating conditions.
Shape the perception technical roadmap by identifying priority problems affecting field performance.
Elevate engineering quality standards through code reviews, design evaluations, and technical mentorship by example.

Requirements

Ph.D. with at least 3 years of industry experience, or an M.Sc. with at least 6 years of experience in Computer Vision, Robotics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
Demonstrated history of developing and shipping functional perception systems for robotics, autonomous driving, drones, AR/VR, or similar domains.
Deep technical knowledge in modern perception areas including object detection, tracking, segmentation, and depth estimation.
Ability to lead through technical influence without holding a formal management role.
Fluent English language communication skills.
Eligibility to work on defence-related projects and obtain required security clearances.

Nice to Have

Published research papers at major venues such as CVPR, ICCV, ECCV, or NeurIPS.
Contributions to popular open-source robotics or computer vision projects.
Background in academic teaching or research combined with industry practice.
Experience deploying models onto resource-constrained, real-time compute hardware like Jetson platforms.
Practical field experience working with UAVs or robots tested outside controlled laboratory settings.
