Role Overview

Grafana Labs is seeking a Staff Backend Engineer to join the Mimir Query sub-squad within the Databases team on a remote basis within the United States. This role suits a self-motivated engineer who wants to design, build, and operate critical multi-tenant distributed telemetry systems operating at scale.

Key Responsibilities

Influence the team roadmap and personal career objectives while collaborating to deliver new features and improvements.
Drive projects from the initial idea stage all the way to ongoing operations once delivered to customers.
Design, build, operate, and maintain critical systems with a strong focus on reliability, performance, and availability.
Participate in follow-the-sun on-call rotations and take operational ownership of running services.
Write and review pull requests, author design documents, and shepherd automated release rollouts.
Contribute to the open-source culture by engaging with projects outside the immediate team scope.

Requirements

Solid programming experience in at least one language, with familiarity in Go, Python, C, C++, Rust, or similar technologies.
Demonstrated experience leading and delivering projects from gathering requirements and brainstorming to shipping products.
Practical background in developing cloud software or systems engineering.
Hands-on experience with on-call duties and adherence to the DevOps model.
Ability to write clean, robust, performant, and maintainable software.
Familiarity with observability systems, microservices architectures, and distributed systems.
Comfort utilizing LLMs like Claude and Codex in daily development workflows.

Nice to Have

Experience working with Kubernetes.
Experience working with queue systems such as the Kafka protocol.
Prior use of Grafana and Prometheus in operational roles or personal homelab projects.
Familiarity with infrastructure as code concepts.

Salary and Benefits

Base compensation range in the United States is USD 174,986 to USD 209,983 per year, with actual pay varying based on level, experience, and skillset.
Additional benefits include equity, bonuses if applicable, and a global annual leave policy of 30 days per annum including 3 Grafana Shutdown Days.
