Role Overview

Grafana Labs is searching for a Staff-level Backend Engineer to help create the first production services for a context layer management system. In this position, you will design and ship core backend architecture that supports context ingestion, storage, retrieval APIs, and agent-facing integrations. Working within a new, highly autonomous team, you will navigate ambiguity and transition prototypes into production-grade SaaS solutions.

Key Responsibilities

Build core backend services, including context ingestion and indexing, retrieval orchestration, API access, source configuration, and system administration.
Establish a scalable SaaS foundation by defining multi-tenant architecture, tenant isolation, usage tracking, quotas, audit logs, background jobs, and reliable service boundaries.
Develop APIs and service interfaces enabling AI agents, MCP tools, CLIs, and internal applications to retrieve contextual data, provenance, confidence signals, and warnings.
Balance rapid experimentation with long-term reliability as the project scales from prototype to production.
Operate developed services by instrumenting metrics, logs, traces, alerts, and dashboards to analyze system behavior.
Shape the technical direction, including architecture, service boundaries, storage choices, API contracts, and deployment patterns.
Communicate effectively within a dynamic, collaborative environment and take full ownership of developed AI solutions.

Requirements

Experience building production-grade, user-facing software systems with strong engineering skills.
Practical AI experience involving LLMs, prompt engineering, and GenAI-powered applications.
Proven track record of delivering software successfully into production for active users.
Exposure to cloud-native environments such as AWS, GCP, or Azure.
Experience utilizing observability tools to troubleshoot and understand system behavior.

Nice to Have

Experience building or working with agent frameworks or multi-agent workflows.
Background as a data analyst or working with data platforms like Looker, Tableau, PowerBI, Snowflake, or DataBricks.
Experience building tools targeted at data engineering.
