Role Overview

WHOOP seeks a Staff AI/ML Researcher for the Foundation AI team in Boston, MA. The position centers on creating multimodal foundation models that combine wearable sensor readings, language, biomarkers, and clinical details to power intelligent user experiences.

Key Responsibilities

Create, train, and refine large-scale multimodal foundation models utilizing wearable, text, biomarker, and behavioral data
Perform applied research involving self-supervised learning, representation learning, and downstream fine-tuning
Build scalable distributed training pipelines for high-performance computing environments
Work alongside MLOps, data engineering, and software teams to push models into production with proper observability and robustness
Translate foundation model features into product capabilities alongside research and product groups
Shape the technical roadmap and architecture for foundation model initiatives
Mentor fellow data scientists on deep learning methodologies and multimodal data integration
Maintain ethical, transparent, and privacy-focused artificial intelligence standards

Requirements

Advanced degree in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent professional background
Seven or more years of professional background in applied machine learning, AI research, or large-scale modeling with production delivery experience
Knowledge of modern deep learning and multimodal model training techniques
Competence in Python along with deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch or TensorFlow
Background in constructing and scaling large datasets and models within multi-node and multi-GPU distributed clusters
Familiarity with data, model, and context parallelisms
Practical history in representation learning, self-supervised methods, and post-training applications
Experience utilizing reinforcement learning techniques including PPO, DPO, and GRPO for post-training
Understanding of MLOps principles covering model versioning, evaluation, CI/CD, and cloud computing
Communication abilities suited for cross-functional collaboration
