About this role

The Staff AI Engineer position at Grafana Labs is a remote opportunity based in the United States, designed for experienced technical professionals who want to lead AI agent infrastructure within a global marketing operations team. This role suits senior software engineers with deep expertise in production-grade machine learning workflows and backend automation systems who thrive in high-autonomy environments.

Role Overview

Grafana Labs is seeking a Staff Engineer (AI & Automation) to own the AI agent infrastructure and automation platform that powers the Marketing Operations organization. In this position, the engineer builds multi-agent architectures, LLM integrations, and backend services that connect artificial intelligence models directly to internal and third-party data platforms. Operating with high autonomy, this individual identifies high-leverage challenges across Marketing, RevOps, and SDR teams, designs robust solutions, and ships production systems that internal teams rely on daily.

Key Responsibilities

Own end-to-end development of multi-agent AI systems, covering architecture, implementation, testing, deployment, and ongoing operation.
Build modular, composable agentic systems using orchestration frameworks like LangChain or CrewAI that operate continuously across various teams.
Develop reusable agentic skills invoked across multiple interfaces including Slack, dashboards, internal applications, and command line interfaces.
Implement observability and feedback loops encompassing logging, performance metrics, prompt iteration, model evaluation, and cost management.
Establish governance and compliance standards for AI workflows, including strict access controls, audit trails, personally identifiable information handling, and human-in-the-loop escalation paths.
Build server serverless or containerized services on Google Cloud Platform that scale dynamically with usage.
Partner directly with go-to-market systems, demand generation, and regional marketing teams to scope high-impact automation problems and eliminate manual work.

Requirements

Minimum of 8 years of professional software engineering experience with a strong focus on backend development, systems integration, or data and analytics engineering.
At least 2 years of hands-on experience applying large language models and artificial intelligence to production workflows rather than simple prototypes.
Strong proficiency in Python and JavaScript or Node.js utilizing Git-based workflows, thorough code review practices, and rigorous testing discipline.
Hands-on experience with LLM frameworks and patterns, including prompt engineering, retrieval-augmented generation, function calling, tool use, structured output parsing, and evaluation.
Direct experience building and operating multi-agent systems at scale, covering agent decomposition, orchestration patterns, state management, and production monitoring.
Deep familiarity with Google Cloud Platform, BigQuery, and serverless or containerized services like Cloud Functions and Cloud Run.
Strong understanding of LLM failure modes and production mitigations, such as confidence thresholds, fallback logic, and cost or latency management.

Nice to Have

Experience working with vector databases or retrieval pipelines like Pinecone, Weaviate, ChromaDB, Qdrant, or pgvector.
Familiarity with marketing or sales platforms such as Salesforce, Customer.io, HubSpot, Marketo, or Outreach.
Experience utilizing frontend frameworks like React or Slack Block Kit to build user-facing artificial intelligence tool interfaces.
Background with observability tooling for artificial intelligence systems including LangSmith, Weights & Biases, or custom evaluation frameworks.
Experience with workflow orchestration platforms like n8n, Temporal, Prefect, or Airflow.
Familiarity with the Model Context Protocol or similar standards linking artificial intelligence systems to data sources.
Previous work automating marketing, sales, or customer success workflows within a business-to-business software-as-a-service environment.
