About this role

San Francisco, CA is the location for the Software Engineering Intern role at Niantic Spatial for Summer 2027, suiting students pursuing a relevant degree who want to own a real problem on a specialized track.

Role Overview

Niantic Spatial is hiring software engineering interns for Summer 2027 to be embedded in a specialized track. Interns will own a real problem on a small team, write production code, and work on petabyte-scale 3D reconstructions, foundation models, and positioning infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities

Implement, train, and evaluate model architectures in PyTorch, iterating on data loaders, loss functions, and training loops.
Design and scale distributed training pipelines for the Large Geospatial Model handling petabyte-scale spatial data.
Build high-throughput ingestion and preprocessing pipelines transforming raw imagery and 3D point clouds into training-ready datasets.
Instrument training runs with metrics, dashboards, and alerting.
Build and ship features for managing organizations, projects, spatial data, and content.
Design consistent, well-documented, and easy-to-use API interfaces connecting products, applications, and developer tools.
Connect steps behind core product workflows from uploading and processing data to making results available.
Design and ship microservices in Go or C++ in the critical path of positioning and reconstruction APIs.
Profile service bottlenecks, improve latency, and enhance system observability through structured logging and metrics.

Requirements

Currently pursuing a BS or MS in Computer Science, Robotics, Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Computer Vision, or a related field.
Proficiency in TypeScript, Python, C++, or Go for Infrastructure and Backend tracks.
Genuine curiosity about how AI interacts with the physical world such as 3D reconstruction, spatial reasoning, or real-world positioning systems.
Ability to work independently, debug ambiguous problems, and communicate clearly with a small team.
Available for 4 days per week in the San Francisco office for the full 12-week internship.

Nice to Have

Experience with cloud infrastructure including Kubernetes, AWS or GCP, Docker, and Terraform.
Familiarity with CUDA or GPU parallelization.
Open-source contributions to libraries like PyTorch, OpenCV, COLMAP, or similar.
Prior work in robotics, autonomous systems, XR, or spatial computing through coursework, research, or projects.
Exposure to Gaussian Splatting, NeRF, or 3D reconstruction techniques.
Familiarity with REST APIs.
Experience with SQL or other relational databases.
Experience using AI-assisted development tools like Claude and ChatGPT to write, debug, and improve code.
