About this role

Niantic Spatial is seeking an AI Engineer, Computer Vision to join the localization team in San Francisco, CA. This full-time hybrid position suits a professional with experience in deep learning and computer vision who wants to build precise spatial intelligence systems.

Role Overview

Niantic Spatial is hiring an AI Engineer, Computer Vision to contribute to deep learning models within the localization system. Located in San Francisco, CA, this role involves working across the full development pipeline, from data pipelines and model training to production deployment. The position is situated within a hybrid work schedule requiring at least three days per week in the office.

Key Responsibilities

Implement, train, and evaluate visual localization models in PyTorch, focusing on feature extraction, matching, image retrieval, pose regression, and scene-coordinate regression.
Contribute to data ingestion and preprocessing pipelines that convert raw images, poses, and 3D point clouds into training datasets.
Run training jobs across GPU environments utilizing a large image corpus while collaborating with infrastructure teams.
Build and maintain the evaluation suite for localization to monitor pose accuracy, recall, and latency under production loads.
Support production deployment by assisting with export, inference optimization, and live monitoring alongside senior engineers.
Bridge research and product development by translating field failures into training data improvements.

Requirements

Experience training deep learning models for computer vision tasks in PyTorch.
Foundational understanding of visual localization, learned feature matching, image retrieval, pose estimation, SLAM, or structure-from-motion, along with underlying 3D geometry.
Comfort working with large image or 3D datasets, including preprocessing and data curation.
Familiarity with GPU-based training and the ability to diagnose bottlenecks in data loading, compute, or architecture.
Strong Python programming skills.
A bachelor's or master's degree in computer science, computer vision, robotics, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

Nice to Have

Published or contributed work on learned localization, visual place recognition, scene-coordinate regression, or vision foundation models in venues such as CVPR, ECCV, ICCV, NeurIPS, 3DV, or equivalent.
Experience with large-scale self-supervised or multi-view pretraining, or fine-tuning vision foundation models for geometric tasks.
Exposure to inference optimization for edge or mobile hardware including TensorRT, ONNX, or CoreML.
Experience with petabyte-scale spatial data such as point clouds, meshes, posed image collections, or geospatial indexing.
Background in robotics, augmented reality, 3D reconstruction, digital twins, or autonomous systems.
Prior industry or research internship experience shipping a production computer vision system.
