Role Overview

Baseten is seeking a Software Engineer to join their EPD team in San Francisco or remotely. This full-time role suits an experienced engineer with a passion for machine learning infrastructure who wants to build products that help companies ship cutting-edge AI.

Key Responsibilities

Design ergonomic APIs and abstractions to handle complex resources and lifecycles.
Build features across the entire technology stack, spanning the API layer, backend logic, databases, and infrastructure.
Fine-tune and deploy models directly to gain a deep practical understanding of user workflows.
Collaborate closely with research engineers and model developers to identify pain points and requirements in post-training workflows.
Drive long-term system reliability enhancements and boost overall engineering velocity.
Resolve customer issues and address bugs quickly and efficiently.

Requirements

Minimum of five years of professional experience building software applications.
Comprehensive understanding of distributed systems, databases, and the web stack.
Background in creating infrastructure products or developer tooling for internal or external audiences.
Strong product sense, specifically regarding developer-focused tools.
Genuine interest in AI and machine learning infrastructure with a readiness to learn.
High agency, strong ownership mindset, and excellent communication skills.

Nice to Have

Experience taking features and products through full release lifecycles, from MVP to Beta and GA.
Knowledge of model development methods including reinforcement learning, supervised fine-tuning, LoRA, and synthetic data generation.
Familiarity with open source training frameworks and the training stack like PyTorch, NCCL, Megatron, and distributed training methods such as DeepSpeed.
Background in building AI agents, tools, or products.
