About this role

This remote role suits an experienced software professional with a background in aerospace or autonomous vehicles who wants to direct autonomy architecture for unmanned aircraft systems. The position involves scaling an existing autonomy stack onto company aircraft to manage large drone swarms.

Role Overview

Swarm Aero is hiring a Software Engineer, Autonomy for a remote position. The engineer will own the architectural direction for perception, planning, and control systems operating onboard the aircraft swarm.

Key Responsibilities

Own and evolve the autonomy stack by extending robotic foundations with agentic AI for onboard reasoning, adaptation, and swarm coordination.
Harden and improve inter-robot and command and control communication protocols for tactical swarm decision-making on the edge under degraded and contested conditions.
Evaluate technical tradeoffs regarding onboard versus offboard compute, centralized versus distributed decision-making, and determinism versus adaptability.
Transition autonomy capabilities from integration and testing into fielded operations and connect test data back into the stack.
Mentor and guide a growing team of robotics engineers.
Write clean, maintainable, and efficient code to establish engineering standards.
Travel up to 25% of the time for onsite testing and integration events.

Requirements

Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Robotics, or a related technical field.
Five or more years of experience building and deploying autonomy software at a major aerospace company or autonomous vehicle program.
Documented record of owning the architecture for a shipped autonomous system.
Expertise in at least one systems language including C, C++, Rust, or Go.
Experience deploying and validating frontier autonomy systems such as vision-language-action models, learned world models, trajectory optimization, sensor fusion, and multi-agent coordination.
Strong software engineering practices focused on testable and reliable code.

Nice to Have

Experience with multi-agent or swarm systems.
Experience with robotics middleware like DDS, ROS2, ZeroMQ, or gRPC, and serialization formats like Protobuf.
Familiarity with government UxS interoperability standards such as OMS/UCI, STANAG 4586, and FACE.
Prior technical lead, staff engineer, or architect experience on an autonomy team.
