About this role
The Automation team at Coalition builds and deploys AI agents designed to automate manual work and solve operational challenges across the company. In this hands-on engineering role, the engineer will author reusable skills, wire agents to systems of record through MCP, establish evaluation frameworks, and ship production-ready workflows that internal teams rely on daily.
The position functions similarly to a forward-deployed engineer operating internally, requiring direct collaboration with business units to map out undocumented processes and translate them into reliable automation. Candidates who thrive in this environment possess deep, practical experience building LLM-backed applications, strong communication skills to bridge technical and operational gaps, and the ability to navigate ambiguity effectively.
What you will do
- Author reusable skills by translating a team's processes, judgment, and edge cases into formats that agents can invoke.
- Build within the agent architecture by wiring agents to systems of record through MCP servers and composing workflows.
- Define criteria for correctness with business teams, construct eval sets, establish baselines, and make data-driven shipping decisions.
- Take agents from prototype to production by implementing permissions, human-in-the-loop checkpoints, audit trails, and rollbacks.
- Partner closely with the data engineering team to manage the access, models, and quality of data read and written by agents.
- Tune deployed agents based on real user behavior and document processes so business owners can manage them independently.
What you need
- Substantial hands-on experience shipping LLM-backed applications including prompting, tool use, agentic loops, and multi-step workflows.
- Practical background with MCP, tool authoring, and orchestrating agents against real systems of record.
- Demonstrated experience building eval sets and using them to drive technical decisions.
- Fluency with agentic coding tools like Cursor to accelerate development inside unfamiliar codebases.
- Strong proficiency in Python alongside comfort with SQL and direct interaction with production data models.
- Ability to communicate with non-technical operators to map processes and translate them into technical requirements.
- At least 5 years of hands-on software development experience.

- Experience building or maintaining MCP servers
- Prior solutions engineering, professional services, internal tools, or startup founding experience
- Working knowledge of automated systems including Linear, Jira, Zendesk, Salesforce, and Snowflake
- Background in insurance, fintech, or another regulated domain

Coalition operates as a remote-first organization with opportunities based in Canada. The compensation reflects the cost of labor across several Canadian geographic markets.
What is the salary range for this position?
In Alberta, British Columbia, and Ontario, the base salary ranges from $128,500 to $160,600 per year. For all other locations, the base salary ranges from $115,600 to $144,540 per year.
What does the interview or hiring process involve?
