Senior Software Engineer - Product-Led Growth
About this role
The Product-Led Growth team at Toast is focused on developing the in-product experiences that guide restaurants in discovering, trying, purchasing, and adopting Toast products. This work is directly tied to revenue, as every shipped experience has a conversion metric, allowing the team to quickly validate hypotheses about customer behavior. The team is evolving Product-Led Growth from a set of manual campaigns into a scalable platform encompassing shared targeting, offer delivery, purchase flows, and measurement services. Engineers on this team will be responsible for shipping experiments into production, analyzing the results, and building the shared services that accelerate the launch of new features and experiments.
This role sits at the intersection of product development, data science, and growth strategy. Individuals in this position will translate customer behavior hypotheses into tangible, targeted in-product features, using data to prove or disprove assumptions. A successful candidate will work closely with various cross-functional partners to ensure that product changes align with business goals like adoption and upsell targets. It is ideal for someone who thrives on measurable impact and enjoys building infrastructure that enables rapid experimentation.
What you will do
- Drive the end-to-end development of backend services supporting in-product growth experiences such as eligibility, targeting, offer delivery, self-serve purchase, activation, and conversion tracking.
- Build shared infrastructure, including reusable targeting and eligibility services, campaign configuration, and a purchase flow that new offers can integrate into.
- Develop and maintain integrations with dependent systems, consuming data from propensity scores, Toast IQ recommendations, and CMS-driven campaign controls.
- Construct LLM-powered experiences within Toast IQ, focusing on prompt and tool design, evaluation, and production monitoring.
- Design experimentation and attribution instrumentation to ensure every launch has a clear measurement story.
- Utilize production data to rapidly determine whether to scale or discontinue specific product experiences.
- Collaborate with product, design, marketing, sales, and data science teams to convert business objectives into testable product changes.
- Contribute to technical design discussions and help establish engineering standards for the growing team.
- Mentor other engineers through code reviews and technical guidance.
What you need
- Possess over five years of software engineering experience building and maintaining production backend systems using Kotlin, Java, or another object-oriented language.
- Must have sufficient full-stack experience to implement necessary web or native front-end changes when required.
- Demonstrated ability to own features completely through the lifecycle, including design, launch, measurement, and iteration.
- Proven capability to act as a product-minded builder, comfortable making product calls and iterating based on actual customer behavior rather than just executing tickets.
- Experience with experimentation, A/B testing, or growth engineering, coupled with a working understanding of attribution principles.
- Experience building features on top of data products such as scores, segments, or recommendations is beneficial.
- Familiarity with building on LLMs or AI platforms, either in production or in personal projects.
- Comfort with ambiguity and making necessary tradeoffs between speed and system scalability.
