About this role

Mercury is seeking a Senior Software Engineer for the Command team to develop and scale LLM-powered financial assistant tools. This remote-friendly position is well-suited for an experienced technologist interested in shaping the future of AI-driven business banking interfaces.

Role Overview

The Senior Software Engineer - Mercury Command position involves building and expanding Command, an LLM-powered financial assistant that lets users handle workflows like cash flow analysis, invoice management, and payments using plain language. The selected candidate will lead the design of agentic workflows, shape data contracts between business logic and the model, and maintain the prompt architecture. Working across the full stack from system prompts to frontend components, this role directly influences how customers interact with financial tools.

Key Responsibilities

Design and ship new Command skills and domain-specific instruction sets for tasks like sending money and managing invoices.
Build agentic workflows and define the multi-step agent interaction architecture.
Collaborate with backend teams to establish tool schemas and data contracts between business logic and the model.
Own features end-to-end, spanning system prompts and frontend rendering components.
Maintain and evolve prompt architecture, including system prompts, skill loading systems, session context, and compliance layers.
Tune model behavior across reasoning effort, prompt caching, fallback chains, and streaming patterns.
Develop and expand the eval harness by writing test cases and scoring rubrics to prevent regressions.
Partner with product and compliance teams to define and test correct functionality.

Requirements

Seven or more years of professional software engineering experience.
Deep technical expertise in building and scaling production-grade LLM-powered applications.
Experience designing reliable, explainable, and safe agentic systems for multi-step workflows.
Track record of building evaluation infrastructure to measure actual product efficacy rather than simple output plausibility.
Deep understanding of deployment tradeoffs such as latency, cost, and compliance.
Comfort using TypeScript and a willingness to learn Haskell, or existing familiarity with both languages.
Ability to work across the full stack of an AI product from prompts to streaming frontends.
Experience mentoring other engineers and raising team technical standards.
