About this role

Role Overview

Givebutter is hiring a Senior Software Engineer, Integrations, to join the growth pod on a remote basis. This full-time position suits an experienced backend developer who enjoys designing public APIs and connecting third-party platforms that nonprofits rely on every day.

Key Responsibilities

Take end-to-end ownership of one or more partner integration surfaces and keep them aligned as product, sales, and success needs evolve.
Shape the public API to support growing audiences, including AI agents acting on behalf of non-coding nonprofits.
Prototype, spike, and de-risk new partnerships to discover innovative ways to connect external services.
Design and defend robust API contracts, data flows, and webhook structures for long-term use by engineers and automated agents.
Collaborate closely with an existing integrations lead, transitioning into shared ownership over time.
Act as a technical translator between product teams, marketing, growth, and external partner engineers.

Requirements

Minimum of 4 years of experience shipping production-grade backend services using a modern web framework.
Strong proficiency in PHP and Laravel, or equivalent fluency in adjacent frameworks like Rails, Django, or Spring.
Deep familiarity with HTTP semantics, REST API design, and scalable integration patterns.
Solid SQL skills, specifically with MySQL or comparable relational databases.
Practical background in building against real-world third-party APIs rather than only ideal documentation.
Experience designing observable failure paths, async job workflows, and queued work.
Strong understanding of webhooks, OAuth, and trust-boundary decisions to maintain a secure public API.
Active utilization of terminal-based AI development tools like Cursor or Claude Code, paired with a solid review discipline.
Previous experience participating in an on-call rotation for production services.
Comfort navigating an established PHP and Laravel monorepo.

Nice to Have

Past contributions to designing a public API that successfully scaled.
Personal projects involving custom AI tooling, agent workflows, or custom skills.
Familiarity with the emerging landscape of AI agents consuming APIs for end users.
Strong opinions regarding specifications versus implementations, such as JSON:API, GraphQL, or OAuth versions.
Prior experience working within the nonprofit or mission-driven sector.
