Role Overview

TRM Labs is seeking a Senior Software Engineer, Database Engineer to develop, operate, and scale relational database systems serving petabyte-scale data in North America. This remote role suits an experienced engineer who wants to own the serving layer end-to-end, helping build a safer financial system for billions of people.

Key Responsibilities

Own query tuning, index design, and schema optimization on petabyte-scale Postgres and Citus to keep customer-facing APIs fast and available.
Cut storage and compute costs by utilizing AI-assisted analysis to detect compression and data-model opportunities before shipping validated changes.
Build agentic automation for routine database operations, including disk scaling, blue-green deployments, and self-serve pgbouncer provisioning.
Protect data integrity and reduce latency by driving agentic validation of database changes prior to production deployment.
Manage change data capture (CDC) pipelines using tools like PeerDB, Fivetran, and Debezium, while leveraging AI tooling to debug replication failures.
Migrate workloads off first-gen infrastructure and prototype new data stores using AI-accelerated spikes.
Codify workflows into AI-native runbooks and internal tooling to elevate team leverage.

Requirements

Bring 5 to 8 years of hands-on experience building and operating production PostgreSQL, including Citus, Aurora, AlloyDB, or equivalent distributed Postgres.
Possess deep SQL optimization skills, covering explain plans, CTEs, window functions, partitioning, index design, and query-planner behavior in distributed environments.
Demonstrate practical experience using change data capture (CDC) tools such as PeerDB, Fivetran, Debezium, Datastream, or Airbyte.
Use database profiling tools like pganalyze to interpret metrics and logs, along with LLMs to summarize performance findings.
Write production automation code in Python or Go, including agentic automation for database tasks.
Maintain daily familiarity with AI coding tools like Claude and Copilot to accelerate development cycles.
