Role Overview

Ozow seeks a Senior Software Engineer (AI-Enabled) to join the development team in Cape Town. This is a hands-on engineering role focused on building and modernising software using artificial intelligence rather than autonomous agent workflows. The professional will lead the design and delivery of digital payment platforms while integrating AI models during system modernization.

Key Responsibilities

Lead the design and delivery of software solutions alongside cross-functional teams to meet high-quality standards.

Direct the migration of existing systems to modern, AI-native services with risk controls ensuring live platforms stay stable.

Build features integrating large language models utilizing context engineering, embeddings, and retrieval-augmented generation.

Manage the data layer behind AI features including vector search, relational, and NoSQL databases.

Write clean code utilizing AI coding tools and define guardrails for safe AI usage across the software lifecycle.

Resolve complex technical issues, manage system architecture trade-offs, and ensure services handle high-volume payment traffic.

Lead code reviews, define testing approaches for non-deterministic AI outputs, and own containerised services in cloud environments.

Mentor engineers and champion AI-enabled workflows across the engineering department.

Requirements

Minimum of 7 years of professional experience as a Software Engineer or Software Developer.

Track record of leading technical delivery, ideally supported by an IT diploma or degree.

Development proficiency in .NET 8 C#, JavaScript, and ReactJS, with Python considered strongly beneficial.

Proven production experience working with large language models beyond basic prompt and response, including RAG and embeddings.

Background in leading the migration or replatforming of live, high-volume systems.

System design expertise covering relational, NoSQL, and vector databases, plus cloud services and containerisation.
