Role Overview

The Senior Software Developer, API Platform position at Innovating Traffic Solutions for Smart Cities is a full-time remote role based in Canada that suits an experienced engineer with a strong background in distributed backend systems. This role involves leading the technical execution of a unified API gateway to power web applications, AI workflows, and integration partners.

Key Responsibilities

Design, build, scale, and maintain a stateless API gateway serving as the front door for all company applications and services.
Maintain domain business logic in owning services while using the platform API layer strictly for routing, access control, and formatting standards.
Embed usage tracking, billing hooks, tenant-aware access control, and observability into the platform from the start.
Partner with Architecture, Product, Security, and domain teams to enforce strict API governance like versioning and contract testing.
Design machine-readable, agent-friendly API contracts that empower the AI chatbot and future AI agents to safely invoke capabilities.
Champion cross-team alignment on complex domain modeling and API structures to establish clean and durable contracts.
Create service catalog entries and developer-friendly documentation for easy consumption of platform capabilities.
Write high-quality code primarily in Kotlin, Java, or Go, and utilize AI-assisted development tools while mentoring peers.
Embed and promote AI-assisted development tools within daily engineering workflows while maintaining code quality.

Requirements

7+ years of experience in software engineering focusing on backend systems, platform engineering, or distributed architectures.
Strong backend development experience in Kotlin, Java, Go, Python, or C, paired with hands-on experience in cloud-native ecosystems, AWS, Kubernetes, and Docker.
Proven track record operating production API gateways or API platform layers using Kong, Envoy, AWS API Gateway, Spring Cloud Gateway, NGINX, or Apigee.
Expertise in Domain-Driven Design, contract-first development, and OpenAPI specifications.
Demonstrated ability to transform fragmented internal services into a cohesive developer platform.
Hands-on experience integrating AI coding tools like AMP, Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, or Cursor into daily workflows.
Experience operating within a modern DevOps and Platform Engineering culture.
Familiarity with Model Context Protocol or designing APIs optimized for AI agent consumption and LLM workflows.

Nice to Have

Experience implementing identity management patterns at the edge using OIDC and Auth0.
Experience using Datadog for observability and monitoring.
Familiarity with a data and eventing stack including Postgres, Snowflake, Kafka, and Redis.
