Role Overview

Checkr is hiring a Senior Machine Learning Engineer to design, code, deploy, and monitor production ML services within the central Data and ML team. This position requires working on-site in San Francisco at least three days a week and collaborating closely with product engineering and cross-functional teams to automate document processing, charge classification, and entity resolution.

Key Responsibilities

Build and deploy production ML and AI services, writing model code, APIs, monitoring, and tests.
Design solutions using LLM APIs as building blocks while balancing cost, latency, and quality.
Write clean, testable software utilizing object-oriented programming principles and CI/CD pipelines.
Partner with product engineering teams to translate business challenges into functional ML solutions and define clear API contracts.
Build evaluation frameworks, execute experiments, and iterate rapidly on system performance.
Automate internal pipelines and contribute reusable skills to the agentic platform.

Requirements

Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
Minimum of 6 years of professional software development experience, including at least 2 years building production machine learning systems.
Strong Python programming skills with expertise in object-oriented programming and testable code design.
Hands-on experience integrating LLM APIs into production systems, covering prompt engineering, structured outputs, function calling, and cost management.
Proven ability to build and maintain APIs and work with CI/CD deployment pipelines.

Nice to Have

Experience with MLOps platforms such as MLflow, Amazon SageMaker, or Vertex AI.
Background in document processing, optical character recognition, or information extraction.
Familiarity with PySpark or large-scale data processing technologies.
Experience with Ruby and the Ruby on Rails platform.
Working knowledge of compliance-sensitive domains like fintech, legal tech, or HR tech.
Experience with modern ELT and data transformation tools like dbt and Snowflake.

Salary and Benefits

Base salary range of $207,000 to $244,000 USD per year for candidates based in San Francisco, California.
