Role Overview

Machine learning sits at the heart of how millions of people discover, connect, and engage with conversations on Reddit. As a Senior Machine Learning Engineer, the professional will tackle complex, real-world machine learning problems across both Consumer and Ads organizations. Responsibilities include building systems end-to-end, from research and modeling to production deployment, driving personalization, search, and advertising platforms at internet scale.

Key Responsibilities

Design, build, and deploy production-grade machine learning models and systems at scale.
Own the complete machine learning lifecycle, covering problem definition, feature engineering, training, evaluation, deployment, and ongoing monitoring.
Build scalable data and model pipelines with strong reliability, observability, and automated retraining capabilities.
Work with large-scale datasets to optimize ranking, recommendations, search relevance, prediction, and user understanding systems.
Partner cross-functionally with Product, Data Science, Infrastructure, and Engineering teams to translate complex business challenges into machine learning solutions.
Improve system performance across latency, throughput, and model quality metrics.
Research and apply state-of-the-art machine learning and artificial intelligence techniques, including deep learning, graph architectures, transformers, and large language model evaluation or alignment.

Requirements

3 to 5+ years of relevant experience building, deploying, and operating machine learning systems in production.
Strong programming skills in languages such as Python, Java, or Go, backed by solid software engineering fundamentals.
Strong grasp of machine learning algorithms ranging from classic statistical learning like XGBoost, Random Forests, and regressions to deep learning architectures like Transformers, CNNs, and GNNs.
Hands-on experience working with modern machine learning frameworks including PyTorch and TensorFlow.
Proven ability to design scalable machine learning pipelines, data processing systems, and model serving infrastructure.
Capability to work cross-functionally and translate ambiguous product or business problems into technical solutions.

Nice to Have

Experience with recommender systems, search and ranking systems, advertising and auction systems, large-scale representation learning, or multimodal embedding systems.
Familiarity with distributed systems and large-scale data processing technologies like Spark, Kafka, Ray, Airflow, BigQuery, and Redis.
Experience working with real-time systems and low-latency production environments.
Background in feature engineering, model optimization, and production monitoring.
Experience with generative artificial intelligence and large language model techniques, such as evaluation, alignment, fine-tuning, knowledge distillation, RAG, agentic systems, and productionizing LLM-powered products.
Advanced degree in Computer Science, Machine Learning, or a related quantitative field.

Salary and Benefits

The base salary range for this position is $216,700 to $303,400 USD. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors including skills, depth of work experience, and relevant credentials. In addition to base salary, this role is eligible to receive equity in the form of restricted stock units.
