About this role

The Camera Models team at Torc Robotics builds and maintains core vision systems that empower autonomous trucks to understand their surroundings, detect objects, and interpret camera data. As a Senior Machine Learning Engineer focusing on camera models, you will design, train, and deploy deep learning architectures for object detection, segmentation, and scene understanding within the autonomy stack. You will take ownership of scoped problem areas from data curation to production deployment, analyzing performance across diverse driving scenarios and mentoring junior team members.

This role exists to scale the perception capabilities of automated freight vehicles through iterative model development and robust engineering. An ideal candidate brings strong practical experience in computer vision, proficiency in Python and PyTorch, and a track record of translating complex real-world data into reliable machine learning solutions for robotics or autonomous systems.

What you will do

  • Design, develop, and deploy deep learning models for camera-based perception tasks including object detection, depth estimation, and scene understanding.
  • Own end-to-end model development pipelines, spanning from data curation and training to evaluation and production deployment.
  • Write clean, production-quality machine learning code to support scalable training, evaluation, and inference workflows.
  • Analyze model performance across diverse driving scenarios to identify failure modes, improve generalization, and enhance overall reliability.
  • Contribute to large-scale training pipelines by assisting with dataset preparation, distributed training setups, and experiment tracking.
  • Collaborate closely with data, perception, simulation, and validation teams to integrate models and refine dataset quality and edge case coverage.
  • Improve internal tooling and workflows to accelerate experimentation while contributing to architecture discussions and mentoring junior engineers.

What you need

  • Hold a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Robotics, Electrical Engineering, Machine Learning, or a related field with at least 6 years of industry experience, or an advanced degree with relevant years of practice.
  • Demonstrate hands-on experience developing and deploying deep learning models for computer vision or perception systems.
  • Possess strong programming skills in Python and PyTorch alongside the ability to write production-quality machine learning code.
  • Show proficiency in training and evaluating models utilizing large-scale datasets and distributed compute environments.
  • Understand modern deep learning architectures used in perception, such as convolutional neural networks, transformers, and multi-task models.
  • Exemplify the ability to debug model behavior, analyze performance metrics, and translate ambiguous problems into structured machine learning solutions.

Nice to have

  • Experience in autonomous driving, robotics, or simulation-based machine learning systems.
  • Experience with multi-task learning or unified perception architectures.
  • Experience with large-scale data pipelines, distributed training systems like Ray, or experiment management frameworks.
  • Familiarity with camera calibration, geometric reasoning, or 3D perception from images such as BEV, monocular depth, and structure-from-motion.
  • Experience deploying machine learning models into production or real-world robotics systems.

Benefits

  • A competitive compensation package that includes a bonus component and stock options
  • 100% paid medical, dental, and vision premiums for full-time employees
  • 401K plan with a 6% employer match
  • Flexibility in schedule and generous paid vacation available immediately after the start date
  • Company-wide holiday office closures
  • AD+D and Life Insurance
