TRM Labs is seeking a Senior Legal Counsel, Product to serve as a primary legal partner for the product and engineering organizations within the United States on a remote basis. This high-autonomy position suits an experienced lawyer ready to advise on complex legal issues at the intersection of AI, blockchain data, and business strategy.

Role Overview

In this remote position reporting to the Assistant General Counsel, the Senior Legal Counsel, Product will embed directly into the product development lifecycle. You will join roadmap reviews, spec discussions, and launch-readiness processes while collaborating closely with product managers, engineers, data scientists, and go-to-market teams. Your work will directly support TRM's mission to provide AI-powered intelligence solutions that help public and private sector agencies investigate and disrupt crime globally.

Key Responsibilities

Serve as the dedicated legal partner to product and engineering, providing guidance on product decisions from conception through launch across the entire portfolio.
Advise blockchain intelligence and data teams regarding data collection methods, licensing, sourcing, and the permissible use of first- and third-party data.
Counsel teams on building and deploying AI and machine learning features, including model training, transparency, data inputs and outputs, and emerging regulatory requirements.
Handle intellectual property matters associated with products, such as ownership, licensing, and open-source software use.
Draft and refine legal terms for products, including terms of service, acceptable use policies, data terms, and customer documentation.
Partner with privacy counsel to evaluate data protection implications in technical architectures, data flows, and product specifications with a focus on risk mitigation and compliance.
Identify regulatory and legal risks in proposed features, recommending practical mitigations that maintain product momentum.
Establish scalable legal frameworks, playbooks, and self-service tools to empower engineering and product teams to move quickly with clarity.
Collaborate across departments on regulatory matters, commercial agreements, and special projects.

Requirements

Earned a J.D. from an accredited U.S. law school and maintain an active bar membership in good standing with at least one U.S. state bar.
Bring 6 to 8 years of legal experience working at a reputable law firm, in-house at a technology company, or a combination of both, with a strong emphasis on product counseling.
Demonstrate past experience advising engineering and product teams throughout the full development lifecycle, particularly for data-intensive or AI-powered technology products.
Possess a working knowledge of legal issues impacting technology products, including data licensing, intellectual property, AI and machine learning, consumer terms, and privacy frameworks like GDPR and CCPA/CPRA.
Exhibit strong commercial instincts with the ability to provide pragmatic advice that helps business teams make confident decisions.
Demonstrate comfort operating within ambiguous, cross-jurisdictional environments while managing competing priorities and tight deadlines independently.
Communicate complex legal concepts clearly to non-lawyer stakeholders with the executive presence needed to engage senior leaders and external partners.
Demonstrate familiarity with integrating AI tooling into everyday legal workflows.

Nice to Have

Prior experience advising companies that serve financial institutions or government agency customers.
Familiarity with cryptocurrency, blockchain technology, or fintech.
