Role Overview

KOHO is seeking a Senior Legal Counsel to provide practical, hands-on legal support across commercial, privacy, product, and regulatory matters for both KOHO Tech and KOHO Bank. This remote position is ideal for a generalist lawyer with around six to eight years of Canadian experience who wants to work in a dynamic, regulated banking environment. This role suits an entrepreneurial and pragmatic professional who enjoys variety and wants to help a mission-driven financial organization scale safely.

Key Responsibilities

Partner across KOHO Tech and KOHO Bank to deliver day-to-day legal advice that fuels growth while protecting customers.
Support Product and Partnerships teams by structuring and documenting strategic partnerships and negotiating vendor agreements.
Draft and maintain contract templates, handle contract lifecycle management, and support enterprise risk management initiatives.
Advise on laws and regulations tied to financial services, consumer protection, marketing, and privacy, including drafting terms and conditions.
Review marketing collateral, customer communications, and assist with product launches to identify and mitigate risks early.
Help build scalable, bank-ready legal and regulatory processes alongside supporting privacy matters and corporate legal operations.

Requirements

Possess 6 to 8 years of post-call experience practicing law in Canada, gained in-house, at a law firm, or a combination of both.
Demonstrate strong contract negotiation and drafting skills, alongside familiarity with privacy law, consumer protection, and financial services regulation.
Exhibit high-agency, an entrepreneurial mindset, and a low-ego approach to problem-solving.
Bring a commercial, pragmatic, and solutions-oriented working style with comfort operating in ambiguity and fast-paced environments.
Show strong collaborative and influencing capabilities to build trusted relationships across Product, Compliance, Risk, and Tech teams.
Demonstrate technical curiosity and a builder mentality, looking for ways to streamline legal workflows using technology and AI.

Nice to Have

Experience working in fintech, banking, or another regulated financial institution.
Familiarity with privacy laws, the Financial Consumer Protection Framework (FCPF), and anti-money laundering (AML) legislation.
Background handling lending products or payment services.
Prior experience and interest in designing and implementing legal AI workflows and tooling.
Fluency in French.
