About this role
Designing and shipping innovative UX patterns for conversational interfaces and AI-driven experiences on iOS forms the core of this role, alongside architecting Swift-first features using modern concurrency APIs. The mobile engineering group at Navan creates the next generation of travel and expense technology by blending large language models with strong product design to give travelers an intelligent companion rather than a standard booking application. Engineers here sit directly at the intersection of artificial intelligence and mobile development, turning complex machine learning capabilities into simple, intuitive interactions while collaborating closely with product, design, and backend teams.
Created to help define how users interact with AI-powered mobile products, this position suits engineers who enjoy fast-moving environments and have a strong curiosity about new interaction models like chat, agents, and multimodal user interfaces. A successful candidate will bring deep technical expertise in Swift, a solid track record of shipping consumer-facing applications, and practical experience leveraging AI coding assistants to accelerate development without sacrificing code quality or security.
What you will do
- Design and ship innovative user experience patterns for conversational interfaces and artificial intelligence-driven features on iOS.
- Architect and build Swift-first production-grade features utilizing async/await, structured concurrency, and modern iOS application programming interfaces.
- Lead the implementation of context-aware experiences using user behavior, preferences, and application state while maintaining high performance and strict privacy standards.
- Use metrics, analytics, experimentation, and logging to iterate on features and improve overall quality over time.
- Translate complex machine learning capabilities into simple, intuitive mobile interactions.
- Incorporate artificial intelligence tools such as Claude Code and large language model coding assistants to accelerate development while preserving a well-tested codebase.
- Collaborate across product, design, and backend disciplines within a fast-moving engineering environment.
What you need
- Bring at least 5 years of professional development experience with strong Swift skills in building high-quality iOS applications.
- Demonstrate a deep understanding of Swift and the iOS software development kit, including modern concurrency, structured concurrency, and Grand Central Dispatch usage.
- Build production user interfaces using SwiftUI alongside familiarity with UIKit and framework interoperability.
- Apply experience with reactive patterns like Combine alongside a solid grasp of iOS architecture models such as MVVM, Clean Architecture, and modularization.
- Possess a strong grasp of networking layers including JSON, REST, WebSockets, streaming application programming interfaces, error handling, retries, and offline support.
- Utilize offline storage, background processing, threading, and push notifications within consumer-facing applications shipped to the App Store.
- Demonstrate familiarity with large language model driven features, prompt design, integrating APIs, handling latency, fallbacks, guardrails, and conversational user experiences.
- Hold a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science or a related technical field.

Questions candidates ask
What kind of technology does the team build?
The team builds the next generation of travel and expense technology using artificial intelligence and large language models. The mobile platform blends cutting-edge AI with product and user experience design to deliver an intelligent companion for travelers.
What tools and development practices are used on the engineering team?
Engineers build Swift-first, production-grade features using async/await, structured concurrency, and modern iOS application programming interfaces. The workflow incorporates artificial intelligence development tools like Claude Code and GitHub Copilot to accelerate development.
How is AI used in the hiring process for this role?
Navan uses an AI-assisted automated employment decision tool called Metaview to assist with evaluating resumes against job qualifications. All final decisions, however, are made by human recruiters and hiring managers who review all outputs.
Can I opt out of AI resume screening?
Candidates who prefer to have their application reviewed without artificial intelligence assistance may request a human evaluation by entering their email on the application page. This decision will not affect how the candidacy is evaluated.
