About this role

Engineers on this team design and ship backend services and web features, owning APIs and event-driven data flows that handle money movement, receipts, and policy decisions at company scale. The engineering group in Berlin and London owns the entire expense lifecycle for employees, approvers, and finance administrators, incorporating complex regional requirements such as VAT, tax receipts, and per diem rules. This opening focuses on practical AI integration within production systems, including receipt intelligence, multi-agent conversational expense capture, missing-information assistants, and administrative automation.

Navan builds an AI-powered travel, payments, and expense platform designed for travelers and corporate finance departments. Selected candidates will improve extraction accuracy, reduce latency, optimize inference costs, and enforce safety guardrails across high-volume document processing workflows. Suitable applicants combine solid computer science fundamentals with backend development experience, an interest in financial or workflow-heavy products, and practical exposure to modern AI tools or large language models.

What you will do

  • Design and ship features across backend services and web applications using Java, Spring Boot, Python, or TypeScript.
  • Own APIs and event-driven flows responsible for moving money, receipts, and policy decisions at global scale.
  • Build and extend large language model-backed agents incorporating tool use, grounding, streaming, session memory, and retrieval.
  • Improve document extraction and auto-itemization accuracy, tax field capture, latency, cost efficiency, and provider failover.
  • Instrument production systems with comprehensive observability, quality dashboards, and extraction accuracy metrics.
  • Partner closely with product and design teams on employee, administrator, and mobile artificial intelligence surfaces.
  • Ensure correctness in financial systems through idempotency, strict auditability, proper permissions, and safe data handling.

What you need

  • Bring one to three years of software engineering experience, including internships or strong academic and personal projects.
  • Demonstrate strong computer science fundamentals and backend experience in Java, Spring Boot, TypeScript, Node.js, or Python.
  • Possess hands-on experience working with application programming interfaces, relational databases, and cloud platforms.
  • Show exposure to artificial intelligence tools or projects involving large language models, chatbots, retrieval-augmented generation, or document processing.
  • Maintain an interest in financial or workflow-heavy products such as payments, expenses, accounting, or tax systems.
  • Exhibit good communication skills, a willingness to learn, and a solid understanding of testing, debugging, and production-quality engineering.
  • Be based in Berlin or London, or willing to relocate.

Nice to have

  • Java and Spring Boot
  • AWS, Docker, or Kubernetes
  • PostgreSQL, Kafka, or event-driven architecture
  • OCR, financial workflows, multi-currency, or policy engines
  • AI agents or evaluation tools
