About this role

This Senior Data Scientist role suits experienced professionals who want real ownership in building embodied AI for autonomous driving. Based in Sunnyvale, California, the position connects artificial intelligence technology with real-world automotive products.

Role Overview

As a Senior Data Scientist at wayve, the position focuses on analyzing driving model performance, identifying dataset limitations, and evaluating real-world customer needs. Working within the Product Dependability teams, the professional translates AI capabilities into vehicle-level behavior, helps define data collection standards, and guides model development through statistical analysis without directly building models.

Key Responsibilities

Analyze target markets to understand infrastructure, weather, traffic density, local driving behaviors, and regulatory requirements.
Define Operational Design Domain (ODD) boundaries, edge conditions, and failure triggers to inform data collection and system design.
Map regional driving competencies and quantify complexity and frequency using traffic data and real-world observations.
Analyze model performance metrics and behavioral patterns to identify data gaps, edge-case risks, and improvement opportunities.
Use historical data and statistical models to understand behaviors affecting reliability and Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF).
Translate findings into actionable data strategies, technical requirements, and deployment recommendations with cross-functional partners.
Characterize ODD environments, maintain behavioral taxonomies, create scenario coverage frameworks, and contribute to simulation and testing inputs.

Requirements

Possess 7+ years of experience in systems engineering, automotive data analysis, data science, or a related field.
Demonstrate familiarity with traffic regulations and human driving behaviors across multiple geographies.
Show proficiency with data analysis tools including Python, SQL, GIS, and Jupyter.
Work comfortably with large datasets through platforms such as Databricks.
Visualize and communicate ODD and scenario coverage metrics into actionable insights.
Collaborate across disciplines to translate domain analysis into technical and product requirements.
Thrive in an agile, fast-scaling environment with a strong execution mindset.

Nice to Have

Experience analyzing or defining ODDs for autonomous driving or advanced driver assistance systems (AV/ADAS).
A master’s degree or PhD in Physics, Statistics, or Mathematics, with a specialization in traffic system modeling, autonomous driving deployment, or urban mobility analysis.
