Role Overview

Pleo is seeking a remote Senior Backend Engineer to join the Bank Infrastructure team based in the United Kingdom. This role is ideal for an experienced developer who wants to build and maintain critical payment rails that power safe and reliable money movement at scale. Operating in a progressive environment with over 850 team members worldwide, this position suits a skilled engineer passionate about financial technology and distributed systems.

Key Responsibilities

Design, build, and maintain integrations with partner banks and financial institutions across various payment schemes including SEPA, Faster Payments, and SWIFT.
Take full ownership of inbound and outbound payment flow reliability, covering reconciliation, settlement, and exception management.
Architect highly resilient systems capable of withstanding partner outages, network failures, and intricate edge cases in financial messaging.
Drive initiatives focused on improving observability, error recovery, and operational excellence across all payment processing pipelines.
Partner closely with cross-functional departments such as compliance, product, and finance operations to continuously evolve payment capabilities.
Participate actively in code reviews, handle post-mortems, and provide mentorship to engineering teammates.
Proactively manage technical debt and guide the wider team through complex technical migrations and challenges.

Requirements

Extensive hands-on experience building payment integrations, bank APIs, or financial messaging formats like ISO 20022, SWIFT, SEPA, or Faster Payments.
Comprehensive understanding of end-to-end payment lifecycles including initiation, routing, reconciliation, settlement, and failure handling.
Proven background in designing and operating highly available, distributed systems equipped with robust error recovery.
Server-side development expertise utilizing Kotlin or Java within microservices architectures.
Practical proficiency working with relational databases like PostgreSQL, cloud infrastructure via AWS, Kubernetes, and observability tools such as Grafana.
Strong problem-solving capabilities demonstrated through owning production payment systems during operational incidents.
High proficiency with AI-enhanced development tools like GitHub Copilot or Claude for system design, documentation, and code generation.

Nice to Have

Awareness of payment compliance and regulatory frameworks including AML, sanctions screening, and PSD2.
Solid understanding of customer fund safeguarding regulations and money movement pipelines.
