About this role

Senior Associate, Risk and Structuring Analytics is a full-time hybrid role at Clearway Energy based in San Diego, California, that suits quantitative professionals with energy sector experience looking to build pricing and dispatch optimization models. This position involves developing quantitative models for battery energy storage systems (BESS) valuation, power market analysis, and risk monitoring.

Role Overview

Clearway Energy seeks a Senior Associate, Risk and Structuring Analytics to develop quantitative models that drive BESS valuation, structured products pricing, gas generation optimization, and power market analysis, while monitoring risk exposures. The role builds and enhances the internal quantitative modeling platform, develops BESS dispatch optimization and price forecasting models, and provides independent risk analytics to inform commercial decisions across trading, origination, development, and asset management.

Key Responsibilities

Develop and deploy optimization models and quantitative analysis for BESS dispatch, renewables, gas generation, and data center infrastructure projects across the US.
Build Stochastic, Machine Learning, or Deep Learning models to forecast DA, Ancillary, and RT prices based on fundamental variables.
Maintain gas dispatch, HRCO, toll, and structured pricing models while performing mark-to-market analysis and supporting due diligence, underwriting, and credit analytics.
Refine vendor models or develop in-house capacity expansion models considering market policy, LCOEs, retirements, transmission, reliability, and demand growth.
Benchmark models against actual operations and market outcomes to improve forecast accuracy and optimization.
Build and enhance CWENQuant, develop data pipelines, and create automated workflows and market data dashboards using data science and optimization techniques.
Design and maintain mark-to-market (MtM), Value-at-Risk (VaR), and Profit-at-Risk (PaR) frameworks independently of trading desks.
Run scenario, sensitivity, and stress-testing analyses to quantify tail risk in the portfolio.
Quantify hedge effectiveness and basis risk for structured transactions, PPAs, and tolling arrangements, and recommend hedge adjustments.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Finance, Mathematics, Statistics, Economics, or a related field.
Minimum of 3 years of quantitative or modeling experience within the energy sector, including trading firms, banks, utilities, IPPs, ISOs, or BESS companies.
Working experience developing machine learning or deep learning models using scikit-learn, Keras, or TensorFlow.
Experience with linear or Mixed Integer programming and associated tools like PuLP, Gurobi, or CPLEX.
Strong quantitative background with hands-on coding experience in Python.
Knowledge of BESS assets, renewable and conventional assets, HRCO, and toll modeling.
Strong understanding of power market economics, wholesale market structure, and asset operations in ISO markets like CAISO and ERCOT.
Ability to formulate and articulate viewpoints clearly and handle multiple concurrent efforts accurately.
