About this role

Mistral AI is seeking a Research Engineer for the Forge team in Paris to develop dependable machine learning workflows and production systems. This remote-friendly opportunity suits engineers with strong Python skills who enjoy bridging research experimentation with real-world client requirements.

Role Overview

As a Research Engineer on Forge, the primary focus is transforming complex customer requirements into reliable training and deployment workflows. Operating within the Applied Science department, this role bridges research experimentation and production constraints. The position involves working end-to-end across model adaptation, post-training, evaluation, data pipelines, and infrastructure to deliver impactful client solutions.

Key Responsibilities

Build and improve post-training and evaluation workflows including CPT, SFT, RL, and distillation, turning prototypes into repeatable Forge recipes.
Develop tools and pipelines for synthetic data generation, data curation, training, evaluation, and deployment.
Debug and harden large-scale machine learning systems covering distributed training, scheduling, execution, checkpointing, observability, and reproducibility.
Enhance the Forge codebase through clear APIs, robust tests, comprehensive documentation, and maintainable abstractions.
Advance the reinforcement learning training stack, focusing on high-throughput asynchronous rollout and scalable post-training systems.
Ensure seamless Forge deployments that adapt to diverse client needs across varying hardware, software stacks, cloud environments, and on-premises setups.
Partner closely with researchers and infrastructure engineers to translate system bottlenecks into concrete performance improvements.

Requirements

Strong Python engineering skills with experience managing large codebases through testing, code reviews, continuous integration, and operational ownership.
Hands-on practical experience using PyTorch, JAX, or similar frameworks.
Strong fundamentals in systems and infrastructure.
Experience working with large language model training or post-training, such as fine-tuning, reinforcement learning, distillation, evaluation, or data pipelines.
Excellent debugging capabilities when navigating ambiguous systems like distributed jobs, data issues, quality regressions, or infrastructure failures.
Clear communication skills suitable for interacting with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
High agency, low ego, and comfort working in fast-moving, under-specified environments.

Nice to Have

Distributed training experience with tools like FSDP, DeepSpeed, or Megatron.
Cluster and orchestration experience using SLURM, Ray, Kubernetes, Kueue, Karpenter, or Skypilot.
Background in building reliable machine learning infrastructure, evaluation systems, or large-scale data processing pipelines.
Research experience focused on large language models, agents, multimodal models, reasoning, code, or domain adaptation.
Open-source contributions, academic publications, or widely utilized internal tooling.
Experience training multi-billion-parameter models during pre-training or reinforcement learning phases, including petabyte- and exabyte-scale datasets.
Ability to identify system bottlenecks across the entire stack and drive architectural improvements from first principles.
