About this role

This role suits an applied researcher with a doctorate or equivalent background in artificial intelligence or computer science who wants to advance agentic language models in New York City. The position involves building multi-agent systems and reinforcement learning environments for semiconductor design automation at NormalComputing.

Role Overview

NormalComputing is hiring a full-time Research Engineer for its agentic AI platform focused on semiconductor design automation. The position is located in New York City and offers a salary range between $200K and $400K alongside equity.

Key Responsibilities

Construct multi-agent systems for code generation that interact with semiconductor design automation tools, suggest fixes, and navigate chip design and verification flows.
Develop research prototypes that integrate directly with production agentic code generation tools and partner with engineering teams to productionize successful experiments.
Establish reinforcement learning environments and evaluation frameworks for agents while analyzing proxy rewards and speed-and-accuracy tradeoffs.
Curate datasets from complex technical artifacts, silicon collateral, agent logs, and specifications while managing data cards and licensing.
Conduct disciplined ablations to analyze experiments, document findings, and maintain technical rigor.
Monitor current literature regarding language model agents, reinforcement learning, constrained decoding, and program synthesis.

Requirements

Hold a PhD in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, or possess equivalent research experience with relevant publications.
Demonstrate proficiency in Python and machine learning frameworks, with a preference for PyTorch alongside familiarity with JAX and Hugging Face.
Prove the ability to transition research concepts into operational systems.
Show prior experience designing evaluation environments and reward models for sequential or agentic tasks.
Possess fluency and practical experience with semiconductor design automation tools including simulation, formal, and physical design tools.
Exhibit comfort with data acquisition, curation, data quality evaluation, and licensing.
Communicate clearly and collaborate effectively with engineering colleagues.

Nice to Have

Conducted research in program synthesis, code generation, constrained decoding, or execution-based rewards.
Applied experience with offline reinforcement learning from tool traces or human corrections.
Contributed to open-source projects such as SkyRL, verl, RLlib, Transformers, or PyTorch.
Gained familiarity with semiconductor domains, chip design, or similar complex technical fields.
Demonstrated a track record of moving research outputs into production environments.
