About this role

Located in Silicon Valley, this Hardware Engineer, ASIC Architect role involves defining silicon and system microarchitectures for a custom unconventional compute platform. This position suits a candidate with substantial experience in high-performance digital systems architecture who wants to drive energy efficiency improvements for generative AI workloads.

Role Overview

Normal Computing is hiring a Hardware Engineer, ASIC Architect in Silicon Valley. The individual in this role will define silicon and system microarchitectures for a custom compute platform designed for large language model and diffusion model inference. Responsibilities include leading hardware and software co-design efforts to address memory constraints and translating transformer architectures into custom compute tiles and memory hierarchies.

Key Responsibilities

Define the architecture and microarchitecture of AI accelerator compute blocks, including processing element arrays, datapath organization, and support for sparsity exploitation and reduced-precision computation.
Translate workload analysis and research findings into hardware specifications, producing microarchitecture documents for implementation by RTL engineers.
Reason across the full stack to defend power, performance, and area tradeoffs, moving between algorithm behavior, memory hierarchy, on-chip interconnect, and physical design constraints.
Partner with the compiler lead on instruction set architecture co-design to align the programming model and microarchitecture.
Direct block-level pre-silicon validation and collaborate with FPGA design engineers to de-risk decisions prior to tapeout.
Maintain familiarity with the AI accelerator research landscape by reading and potentially publishing research findings.

Requirements

A degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent work experience.
Substantial experience in the architecture or microarchitecture of high-performance digital systems such as AI accelerators or compute engines.
Ability to transition between algorithm-level analysis and hardware specification.
Experience with simulation-driven architecture utilizing cycle-accurate or analytical models for design decisions before register-transfer level design exists.
Familiarity with quantization and reduced-precision approaches for inference and hardware implementation implications.
Experience writing microarchitecture specifications and collaborating with register-transfer level engineers through implementation.
Proficiency in Python or C++ for performance modeling and analysis, alongside familiarity with SystemVerilog or equivalent register-transfer level languages.
