About this role

The day-to-day work for the Remote Sensing Data Scientist involves developing derived data products from Muon Space's infrared imaging missions. This role centers on taking raw data from spacecraft instruments and transforming it into actionable analytics for end-users in areas like global wildfire detection and environmental monitoring. The scientist will be actively involved in building these products by prototyping and productionizing algorithms that convert Level-1 imagery into higher-level derived products. Key activities include writing production-ready code that feeds into customer-facing services and collaborating closely with senior scientists and product owners on the data product design and roadmap.

This position exists to bridge the gap between rigorous Earth observation science and the fast pace of product development. It is designed for individuals who enjoy hands-on technical work while engaging in cross-functional collaboration. The role requires someone who can operate effectively at the intersection of complex scientific principles and practical software engineering to deliver valuable geospatial insights.

Successful candidates will thrive in an environment that demands both deep scientific understanding and the ability to rapidly develop and deploy solutions. It is ideal for a scientist who is comfortable contributing to product design, validation, and documentation while supporting technical interactions with external customers.

What you will do

  • Build derived data products from Muon's infrared imaging missions.
  • Implement and improve scalable algorithms for processing, transforming, and analyzing multispectral infrared imagery into derived geospatial products.
  • Contribute to the design and roadmap of derived products alongside senior scientists and product owners on the IR Data team.
  • Create technical and customer-facing design documents to align internal capabilities with external stakeholder requirements.
  • Write production-ready code that integrates into customer-facing data product pipelines and operational services.
  • Contribute to the scientific quality, quantitative validation, and integrity of derived products across the IR missions.
  • Collaborate with software engineers, calibration scientists, and instrument engineers to build and maintain operational data product services.

What you need

  • A PhD or an MS with at least three years of industry experience, or a BS with five or more years of industry experience is required.
  • Must possess hands-on experience building geospatial data products, especially those derived from new or novel imaging instruments.
  • Demonstrated experience applying first principles to solve complex scientific problems is necessary.
  • Strong skills in Python development and analysis are required for software implementation.
  • Proficiency in Python development utilizing standard geospatial formats and libraries such as COGs, Xarray, and GDAL is essential.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are needed for collaboration across interdisciplinary teams.
  • Ability to work effectively within a distributed, interdisciplinary team structure is a requirement.

Nice to have

  • Experience processing multispectral or infrared satellite imagery
  • Domain expertise in wildfire monitoring, meteorology, weather, environmental remote sensing, or related Earth observation applications
  • Experience supporting satellite mission product development, commissioning, early operations, or delivering operational pipelines to external customers
  • Demonstrated experience applying ML/DL and advanced image processing to remote sensing data
  • Familiarity with cloud-native geospatial workflows and large-scale data processing (AWS preferred)
  • Experience authoring technical design documents, product specifications, or algorithm theoretical basis documents (ATBDs)

Benefits

  • $171,000 - $191,000 salary
  • Competitive equity grant
  • Comprehensive benefits package
