About this role

This Senior Software Engineer position at Welocalize is located 100% onsite in Santa Clara, CA, and suits a technical professional with hands-on robotics experience who enjoys building data collection systems and directing operator teams. The role involves owning the software, infrastructure, and pipelines that power a large-scale data collection operation for robotic systems.

Role Overview

Welocalize seeks a full-time Senior Software Engineer for Project Hydra to direct and build the systems supporting large-scale robotic data collection. The position is a 12-month W-2 contract operating Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with the possibility of extension.

Key Responsibilities

Design, build, and maintain data collection station software, including the teleoperation stack, multi-camera recording, and session tooling.
Deploy and upgrade software across the fleet without halting collection, maintaining the health of workstations, containers, and networking.
Manage the entire data pipeline, encompassing automated validation, dataset conversion, uploads, metadata, and versioning.
Develop QA tooling to detect dropped frames, stream desync, bad calibration, and mislabeled episodes prior to training.
Direct a dedicated team of teleoperators by defining task protocols and standard operating procedures, onboarding staff, reviewing session quality, and unblocking daily tasks.
Maintain fleet reliability through calibration and firmware pipelines, sensor and end-effector integration, fault root-cause analysis, and vendor escalation.
Bring up new stations and hardware embodiments while reporting throughput, yield, and data health metrics to the research team.

Requirements

Master's degree in Computer Science, Robotics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field, or a Bachelor's degree with equivalent hands-on experience.
Minimum of 3 years of experience building software for physical robot systems rather than simulation only.
Demonstrated history of designing, shipping, and maintaining a system that other people depended on daily.
Proficiency in Python, Linux, Docker, Git, CI, and SSH-based fleet administration.
Familiarity with robot middleware and real-time multi-sensor recording utilizing ROS 2 or equivalent vendor SDKs.
Background in supporting data collection or teleoperation operations, including building operator tools and tracking throughput and quality metrics.
Comfort working with physical robot hardware such as robot arms, humanoids, dexterous hands, and RGB-D cameras.
Ability to lead operators without formal authority by writing clear standard operating procedures, training personnel, and communicating status proactively.

Nice to Have

Experience with humanoid or bimanual platforms such as Unitree, Fourier, and ALOHA or ARX-class rigs, alongside dexterous hands.
Background in XR teleoperation including Quest, PICO, Vision Pro, motion-capture gloves, and whole-body retargeting.
Familiarity with imitation-learning data tooling like LeRobot, HDF5 or Zarr episode stores, dataset versioning, and S3 at terabyte to petabyte scale.
Experience building internal dashboards or tooling for production lines or high-throughput laboratories.
Open-source contributions directed toward robotics data or teleoperation tooling.
