About this role

The Post-Training Research Engineer position at Baseten is a full-time remote or San Francisco-based role focused on scaling custom model inference and training tooling. This opportunity suits machine learning professionals with strong math and computer science foundations eager to advance AI infrastructure.

Role Overview

Baseten is looking for a research engineer to join its growing Post-Training team. Custom models are vital to customer success, with the vast majority of traffic involving models that have undergone post-training like reinforcement learning, supervised finetuning, or bespoke research methods. This role involves building in-house tooling to support training diverse model architectures efficiently at scale, working across the entire stack from deep technical topics to systems-level engineering.

Key Responsibilities

Build internal tooling to support the efficient, large-scale training of various model architectures and techniques.
Work across the stack, spanning systems-level concepts like Kubernetes, cgroups, storage systems, and networking topologies.
Engage with PyTorch distributed tensor computation and GPU kernels to optimize performance.
Collaborate with researchers to tackle messy problems, derive specifications, and execute solutions.

Requirements

Strong background in machine learning with solid foundations in mathematics and computer science.
Deep understanding of modern machine learning techniques and tools used for training transformers.
Advanced experience using tensor or array computation libraries such as PyTorch, TensorFlow, or Jax.
Detailed knowledge of transformer training parallelism strategies, including data parallelism, sharded data parallelism, tensor parallelism, pipeline parallelism, and context parallelism.
Experience profiling and enhancing the performance of distributed GPU programs.
Ability to conduct roofline analysis on transformer training setups.
Familiarity with high-performance computing and distributed computing platforms like Slurm, Ray, Kubernetes, and Dask.
Knowledge of cluster networking technologies such as Infiniband, RoCE, and GPUDirect.
Solid understanding of operating systems concepts including processes, files, kernel drivers, containerization, and networking protocols.
Creativity and a willingness to question existing approaches, assumptions, and tooling choices.
