About this role
New Relic needs a design leader in Bengaluru to solve the challenge of making autonomous AI systems legible and trustworthy for users. Operating within a global observability platform, this team builds products like autonomous incident response systems, the agentic platform layer, and AIOps event correlation tools where established design patterns do not yet exist.
This person will manage a local team of product designers while staying hands-on to define how humans interact with machine-driven decisions and root cause analysis. Success in this position requires balancing people management with direct contribution, bridging local engineering partners with global teams in the US and Spain, and advocating for user understanding over pure technical capability.
What you will do
- Manage and mentor a team of product designers by conducting regular one-on-ones, providing actionable feedback, and supporting their professional growth.
- Oversee design quality across AI-driven products to ensure features make autonomous systems legible and build genuine user trust.
- Represent the user perspective in roadmap discussions with product management and engineering peers.
- Contribute individual contributor design work and use AI prototyping tools like Figma AI, Claude, and Gemini when necessary.
- Partner with cross-functional teams in Bengaluru, the US, and Spain while communicating effectively across time zones.
- Help recruit and hire diverse talent while fostering an inclusive team culture.
What you need
- Possess at least 8 years of product design experience with a focus on technically complex B2B or enterprise software.
- Demonstrate 2 to 4 years of direct people management experience including performance feedback and career development.
- Bring a genuine curiosity and developing point of view regarding AI interaction design, trust, transparency, and human-in-the-loop workflows.
- Have experience navigating ambiguity and defining problems where solutions are not yet settled.
- Communicate clearly in written and verbal English across distributed teams and time zones.
- Show familiarity with code-adjacent tools such as Claude Code and VS Code to engage directly with technical work.
- Provide a portfolio displaying your design process, reasoning through hard problems, and tradeoffs made.
Nice to have
- Hands-on experience designing AI-native products like agentic workflows, autonomous systems, and AI confidence visualization
- Experience with observability, incident response, or developer-facing infrastructure products
- Familiarity with design systems and when to push on them
- Experience hiring and growing a design team over time
