Role Overview

Brainco is hiring a Machine Learning Engineer, Platform in New York City, NY to develop the core machine learning infrastructure that powers institutional applications. The role focuses on creating shared capabilities such as document extraction, foundation models for construction documents, model routing, unified evaluation systems, and continuous improvement loops.

Key Responsibilities

Translate specific project team requirements into reusable platform capabilities without premature abstraction.
Own platform capabilities end-to-end, maintaining responsibility for their production behavior across all deployments.
Apply large language models, reinforcement learning fine-tuning, and agentic systems to support critical institutional workflows.
Collaborate with internal project pods as primary customers and engage with domain experts when necessary.
Engineer solutions for production environments by balancing accuracy, latency, cost, and reliability.
Codify learnings discovered by individual teams into platform improvements inherited by the entire company.

Requirements

Understand the fundamentals of machine learning, including loss functions, generalization under distribution shift, and evaluation practices.
Experience with frontier AI techniques including prompting, fine-tuning, tool use, and reasoning.
Ability to determine the appropriate approach among fine-tuned segmentation models, vision-language models, rule engines, or composite systems.
Possess platform instincts to identify generalizable patterns across disparate team requests and treat internal teams as customers.
Comfort operating in ambiguous environments where problems, data, and definitions of success require definition.
